ADD2SKY v1.0 Released

At the Space Telescope Science Institute, we are working to try to allow anyone to post their images onto GoogleSky in a simple manner.
While Google released a tool called wcs2kml a while ago, it was too cumbersome for simple users to install and run.

ADD2SKY will allow anyone to generate KMZ files ready for GoogleSky from their own images.

In this first release, we targeted astronomers and released ADD2SKY at the American Astronomical Society going on now in Austin, TX. However, we are working hard to allow amateurs to use ADD2SKY as well.

ADD2SKY will take a single FITS image (the format used by astronomers for images) and "warp" it to the GoogleSky sphere using a simple intuitive interface.
Either a single FITS file, which will generate a monochrome image, or a FITS file and a color image of the same field, in which case the FITS file will only be used to determine the correct image orientation and position (using something astronomers call WCS).

ADD2SKY is written in Java and runs on Windows, Macs and Linux. You can find it at ADD2SKY Page

In particular, we are working on:

  • Combine 3 FITS into a Color Image
  • Upload any image and we will figure out where it is in the sky
  • Allow you to have more control on the output: like adding comments, author's name etc.

Thanks to Tony Rogers at STScI for coding it all up!

Enjoy

Re: ADD2SKY v1.0 Released

Here is an example of what ADD2SKY does. I used Astrometry.net to solve the Jan 2nd Astronomy Picture of the Day

ADD2SKY & astrometry.net

hi,

I have an image of Comet Holmes which was successfully solved by astrometry.net, now I tried to run add2sky using the original jpeg image and the wcs.fits file downloaded from astrometry.net.

I get the following error:

converting Image to PNG...
done.
cleaning out temp directory...
copying input files to temp dir...
creating tiles directory...
running wcs2kml...

Can't open FITS file 'wcs.fits'
Reading image 2min_2_final.png...
Input image is size 3831 x 2565
Reading FITS file wcs.fits...
ERROR OCCURRED.

I also tried with a much smaller file, but I got the same problem.

I donīt find any additional logging information.

What am I doing wrong?

thx

Philipp

Re: ADD2SKY v1.0 Released

Hello,

after some playing around I was able to create kmz file using a smaller image and the newheader.fits file from astrometry.net.

With my bigger P/17 Holmes image I had no luck so far...

I found the add2sky.log file, but it doesnīt give a lot of information:

Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0
Return code = 0

attached you will find the successfully created kmz file of a region in Cygnus...

thx

Philipp

Re: ADD2SKY & astrometry.net

after some more trials, I was successful to create kmz files using the newheader.fits file, but the "regionation" does not work yet.
