Translate a post

Hi everyone.

You might have noticed that the GEC Welcomes Members who post in their Native tongue.
It sometimes becomes difficult for some to know what their posts are about, but Google has some help.
As well as viewing the placemark you can copy and paste the text into the ever growing translation list at Google Translates . Alternatively if your a power user, you can add instant translate buttons to your browser HERE

Take note: These tools are not totally accurate and are just a guide, but with the GE view and the translation, should give the user a good idea what the Poster is conveying.

Have fun, I know I do, learning about other language's.

Re: Translate a post

Here are a few more:
  • Free Online Language Translation, for some languages this calls InterTran
  • WorldLingo
  • For Vietnamese: VDict.com

The first one also provides links to three sites which can help you identify a language:
    TextCat Language Guesser
    CA : Language Identifier
    Applied Language Solutions Language Identifier

** Edit: Google Translate now also provides language identification. More info: Official Google Blog **

If the accents in the text you are seeing on the screen aren't displayed correctly, or the text looks like garbage, you probably need to change the encoding in your browser:

    IE7 => Page menu - Encoding
Firefox => View menu - Character Encoding
Opera => View menu - Encoding
Safari => View menu - Text Encoding

Try Unicode UTF-8, and if that doesn't work, try some other options, the location of the placemark will probably give a clue as to what the language might be and which option to choose. Note also that the text sometimes displays correctly in the placemark in GE, but not in the post on the BBS, so it may be easier to copy the text from the placemark, if you have difficulty selecting right to left languages with the mouse, just use ctrl-A to select everything, that's for Windows, sorry can't help for the Mac or Linux
