Do's and Not Do's

Things you should and should not do on the Community

Things you should DO:

  • Know how to "Search" the BBS for previously posted places and information.

  • Use Google Earth Community BBS Layers to see if there is a history of placemarks for a given location.

  • Add a description to your placemark.

  • When posting or replying, understand that there are differences between people, cultures, religions, languages, idioms, and much much more.

  • Treat Everyone with respect and understanding. (This includes your friendly and hardworking Moderators)

  • Read the other threads in the Collected Google Earth Wisdom Forum.

  • When someone helps you, be it another memeber or one of the Moderators, thank them, either with a reply or a PM. We all enjoy a pat on the back now and then.

Things you should NOT DO:
  • Post Political, Religious, Racial, or Sexual material.

  • Flame or otherwise degrade Members, Moderators, Administrators, or Google Employees.

  • Create the same post in multiple locations.

  • Create the same placemark in multiple posts or replies.

  • "Bump" a post or reply.

  • Post Advertisements.

  • Post SPAM.

  • Hot Link Images. Please save them someplace you control. There are "Free" services out there. ImageShack is just one.

  • Post another "Area 51", "Crop Circle", or "Atomic Bomb Test".

When in doubt, use some good old common sense or as we call it, Netiquette.

...but no more advice than seems truly necessary!

1. Don't promote your off-topic business

Need help moving your family wealth from Nigeria? As important as that may be, the Google Earth Community BBS is not the best place to look for advice or help on that topic. This Community is for Google Earth users--people who are interested in learning about the world and who want to share world knowledge with others.

For almost every errant "spam" or self-promotional post that could be put here, there is an alternative and more appropriate venue for discussion elsewhere. For example, if your fortune happens to be stuck in Nigeria and you need the help of foreigners to work with local banks in order to make extracting it possible, then you should attend the annual Nigerian EMail Conference. This will give you the best possible chance to interact with Lady Mariam Abacha, Mrs. M Sese-Seko, and Dr, Collins Mdadiwe.

Coming to NYC, I need your help?

Thanks, "Ken", for this perfect example of what I was warning about. I moved this post here from one of the main forums.

Quote:

Coming to NYC, I need your help?

I will be coming to NYC in February. I will be bringing several customers with
me.

We will be staying at the Manhattan "W".

I am coming to prove my discovery. I have lots of documentation supporting RK19, before and after photographs, etc. But
the scientist and media in the field ignore me because I am not one of them.

I hoping someone from the forum will come and report back what they find and maybe even invite and tell
some press guys they can convince to come, even if
for a laugh and nothing more.

They will leave impressed.

My e-mail is ADDRESS DELETED

My phone is NUMBER DELETED.

Please contact me if you can make it. I will have definite dates in a couple weeks.

I recently discovered RK19 by accident. It is truly an amazing find.

Here is a picture of a guy who had been balding 22 years and is now growing hair. He lives in S.F. his "before shots" are on the website. He is 48 years old.

This is all new hair grown over the last 5 months from scalp that had been slick bald for 22 years.

2. Don't abuse Google Earth

Yes, Google Earth is wonderful, amazing, and enlightening. But that does not mean that you should lose your family, job, or home as the result of an addiction to the wonder of Google Earth. If you find that you hear dead relatives beckoning, can no longer remember the names of loved ones, or begin to see a bright light in the distance while your vision grows ever darker, STOP before it is too late! Just take a few hours rest asay from the keyboard and then return for more placemarking and exploring afterwards.

Whatever you do, don't try to explain your love of Google Earth to your tattoo artist (especially after drinking!)

Keyhole tattoo, some may find this excessive, but I would give her a lifetime subscription.

P.S. If you really want to do this, then Eric Merrill is your man. Be sure to send us a picture!
