I thought we should start a thread about some useful tools inside this BBS. This is for using the BBS features, not the use of the Viewer. Check the Placemarks and Overlays thread for hints and tricks inside the Viewer. As questions pop up, we will add to this thread, keeping the answers in one place for easy reference. And now, on with the hints. |

There are lots of ways to link to Pages or Picture outside and within this BBS:
And of course all these means can be used to link other posts within this BBS. This also works within Private Mail (PM's) on this BBS. The following is the code used to make the 4 examples above: Code:
As an added feature, items #2 and #4 can be done by clicking a shortcut beneath your edit window while creating a post or reply, or while editing the same.

Are you new to the BBS or just a bit bored? In either case, have you read EVERY post in ALL of the forums? No! Well, neither have I. But a fun pastime on those rainy or snowy days, grab your favorite beverage and select "Who's Online" at the top of any page in the BBS. Check out what other folks are reading. It's easy and you never know what you might find. While I was writing this, someone was browsing " The Keyhole Arch" ", one of The Seer's Best. Another way to visit semi-random posts would be to sort the Forum on different features. You can sort the threads within a forum by Subject, Poster, Number of Views or Replies, Rating, or by the date it was posted (default). So, sort the forum in a new way and then start at the top... Alpha is interesting and so is Replies. Try it, you may find something that sparks YOUR interest. Have fun

There is a POWERFUL search feature within the BBS, it lets you find posts with specified words or phrases. Look at the top menu bar on any page within the BBS, between "Main Index" and "Active Topics" and give "Search" a try. Remember, when searching, to set ALL 5 of the criterion before submitting the search. The three most important criterion are the Forum (I use ALL Forums), Words, and Date Range (I use 4 Year(s)). "Username search" should be left blank, unless you are searching for a particular users post. Let's try a Search right now with these parameters: All Forums; relgeiz; Subject and Body; Last 4 Years; Show 25 results. ![]() Did it work? If it did, you are back here. What are those different options in the Search Window all about? Each one lets you narrow your search. They are pretty self explanatory, with the exception of "Keyword Search Terms". Separate ALL keywords by spaces. Use keywords for any posts with any keyword. (OR boolean)
Use +keyword for required words within posts. (AND boolean)
Use -keyword to exclude posts with a keyword. (NOT boolean)
Use quotes around a phrase to search for that phrase.
Use spaces around a word to match the exact word. Example: " word " Will NOT find "sword" Example: "word" Will find "sword" Separate ALL keywords with spaces. Did I mention that already? Example: +required -excluded "this phrase" Happy Searching ![]()

Reading a post or reply and get a telephone call from your spouse, she locked herself out of the car at the mall. You have to run. But, you want to reply to the post. There is a great post and you need to research some information before replying but you can't keep your eyes open tonight. ![]() You just found a great post about Submarines and want to see any replies as soon as they occur. You have a collection of placemarks and just posted them, now you want to know when anyone replies. There are 2 different features available to handle these scenarios: Post Reminders (Found at the bottom of every post or reply) ![]() Favorite Topics (Found at the bottom of the entire thread) Favorite Topic! (toggle) Quote: So, the "Reminder" is just that... You are reminded to go back to that post to reply at a later date, or when you have more time or more information. The "Favorites" are to notify you when a new reply to the thread happens. Where do you find the Reminder and Favorite displays? Just look in "My Home" ![]() To set "Favorites" to E-Mail you, simply "Edit" the Subscribe/Unsubscribe notifications. |
