Spitfire Mk IV B
Reginald Joseph Mitchell , designer of the Supermarine Spitfire, was born in Talke Village near Stoke on Trent on 20 May 1895.
Leaving school in 1911 aged 16 he joined the locomotive engineering company, Kerr Stewart & Co of Stoke as an apprentice and upon completion of his apprenticeship he began working in the drawing office.

The first "unofficial" Spitfire was a total failure. The name Spitfire was also "unofficial" at that stage, Mitchell preferring the name "Shrew"
Despite Reginald Mitchell's tremendous skills it was originally designed to meet the Air Ministry's demands for a new generation of fighter aircraft to replace the ageing existing aircraft designed around the twin gun, open cockpit biplane, the specifications being issued by the Air Ministry in 1931 and annotated F7/30.

Sydney Camm , one of Britain's most distinguished aircraft designers, was born in 1893. From his schooldays he had shown a keen interest in aviation, founding the Windsor Model Aeroplane Club and constructing many successful model aircraft. As a child he lived at No. 10 Alma Road, with his siblings one of whom was Fred Camm who was to become editor of the famous 'Practical...' series of magazines. Sydney Camm was a pupil at The Royal Free School, Bachelors Acre, leaving at the age of 14 in 1908.

Hurricane (full size model BAPC241 ) "L1679" "JX-G" in 1 Sqn. colours at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum , Chichester, West Sussex. (Was previously at Museum of Army Flying, Middle Wallop.) www.tangmere-museum.org.uk
Hurricane L1679 was delivered to No 1 Squadron at RAF Tangmere in early 1939 and deployed with the unit to France on 9th September just 6 days after the outbreak of war. When Germany began its blitzkrieg through the Low Countries in 1940, the squadron became involved in daily combat whilst constantly withdrawing to the west as the enemy forces advanced. L1679 was in the thick of it - being flown by several pilots who later became household names, including Flying Officer Paul Richey whose book 'Fighter Pilot' became a classic of the genre. Sadly, L1679 did not survive. Badly damaged during a crash-landing at Mezieres on 10th May she was destroyed on the ground 4 days later. The museum's replica was built in the 1980s at Middle Wallop and, because it includes a Rover V8 engine that turns the propeller, has been used as a taxiable - though not flyable
