NOTE TO MODERATOR: You have locked the San Diego fire thread, but this thread is about Malibu. This is nowhere near San Diego.

BBC NEWS VIDEO ------> 1 -- Troops battle US wildfires
A state of emergency is declared across southern California as more than 1,500 firefighters battle at least 12 blazes across the US state, including one near the city of Irvine

About 1,000 firefighters were called to the blaze at Malibu, home to many wealthy celebrities.

The ground is parched after a record summer heatwave that caused wildfires across large swathes of the western US, from northern Washington state all the way south to New Mexico.

Air crews have been called in to dump water and fire retardant in forests across the state.

This is a map by KPBS that is the most detailed I have seen yet: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&...mp;ll=32.949911,-116.970062&spn=0.277726,0.559616&z=11
Update: The above map updated at around 10:40am.

Excellent link, arkeri. It's a network link so hopefully they will be updating it.
NOTE: Link is for the San Diego area fires.

I've compiled several different resources for viewing information in Google Earth concerning the California fires. Included are satellite views of the smoke plumes, US Forest Service and NASA fire data, maps from local radio station KPBS in San Diego, and time animations by Joey Wade showing the fire spread and smoke plumes.
Read the details here.
