ahh ok then, i didnt know what the term meant, thanks

I have talked with lyon county sheriifs office several months ago and the person in charge of missing persons ( for SF)

at that time they were thinking of checking more fully into the possibility of a second plane/ other plane possibiltites and so on,but the enormity of the problem of ..how to? was a big thing. mostly because of the number of planes in nevada and the way they are cateogorized, registered and so on.

quite difficult to do as i remember, so I dont know if they were successful

Well if you put 2 and 2 together here is what you get....

Rawley saw him flying east from NMR at about 11:00AM...this radar track started shortly after 11AM in the same general area...that is pretty good circumstantial evidence to start a big search in that area...

yes agreed,

but Rawley saw someone flying at 60-80 ft above the deck east down that road, we dont know how far away that plane was when he saw it, is he absolutley positive that it was the plane from the flying M and how is he positive of that? (not just because he was familiar with the flying M plane isnt good enough because the plane could have been a 1/2-1 mile away or some distance)
could it have been another plane, how far away was it, what coloring, what was distinctive about the citabria from the flying M that made him positive,

he saw what he saw and beiives that it was the flying M citabria, I dont doubt his judgement, i just think there is room for more analysis to be sure

many planes of similar coloring are probably around nevada to close parts of california...thats really hard to evaluate

but i agree - circumstantially, it would be very good reason to start the search in that area, but its this type of intel that could be in error as well if there were a different but similar plane in the area

very hard to prove one way or the other

I Guess its my own belief that it wasn/t SF flying down that road at 60-80 ft
but of course thats just my belief based on who steve fossett was, his personality and so on and perhaps some other factors

. “Something must have happened in the cockpit,” Hilton says after dessert. “Maybe a heart attack or something that made it impossible for Steve to attempt an emergency landing.” It’s 8:30 p.m. Hilton goes to bed every night at 8:30.

If you drive through Nevada, it’s hard to believe Hilton’s scenario. The area is so desolate, and so wide open. How could an airplane just disappear here?

In fact, there is a man working in Reno, Nevada, who knows a lot about cases like this one. Timothy Ball trained as a biologist, but today he heads a company called Fireball Information Technologies. He’s a bearded scientist whose people have flown over the entire region and have taken 80,000 aerial photographs, one for each mile.

Ball is still analyzing these photographs. He’s made it through about half of them. Whenever he finds something blue or something white, he zooms in on it. And if the blue or the white remains mysterious, he takes its coordinates and hands them over to a search party. “An airplane that crashes here,” Ball says, “is usually not a wreck. It shatters into a thousand pieces to the point that you can hardly recognize it anymore. And Nevada is huge.” Then Ball shows a few photos of a Piper Cherokee. You can make out a speck of white here and a speck of blue there. Otherwise, there’s just shrubs and cliffs and sand.

What do you think, Dr. Ball?

“He’s out there,” Ball says “somewhere in the Sierra Nevada or in the White Mountains. I’m sure of it. Even if we don’t find him, 20 years from now a hiker will call and say that he’s found something.”

I think it was the zephyr winds....not much time to do anything..

Would like to meet the man, he has developed a very useful software tool and software development is my second passion...

I know Fireball Int'l did not find anything in their very high resolution (6in) images...but in the area I believe he is located a person could walk within 30-50ft of the crash site and not see it...because of the dense trees in many areas this to could be the reason it was not seen from aerial images or sat images...will have to be found on a ground search. There are some areas that can be searched on an ATV and others that a horse would work better..but some areas even walking is difficult to do. To walk 100 yards across a map you would have to walk almost 200 yards..it is pretty much impossible to walk in a straight line for more that several feet...

Take a look at these images and see how many are painted alike...many pilots want their aircraft painted different to others...

Keep in mind some of these images are just model planes...

and I think you are correct,

combine that with density altitude turbulence and maybe insuffecient oxygenated fuel at altitude and BIG PROBLEM and according to my research in other areas- that is what happened

mark twain on the washoe zephyr winds......

“But, seriously, a Washoe wind is by no means a trifling matter. It blows flimsy houses down, lifts shingle roofs occasionally, rolls up tin ones like sheet music, now and then blows a stagecoach over and spills the passengers,” he wrote.

Shame it dont analyse posted pics as well, would be the perfect wind!
Lack of response has made me lose interest, have fun discussing, talking a break from posting pics, good luck.

agreed,, and those are great pics as well, the decathalon has its own designed paint job it seems, sunburst on the wings etc and so many of those planes are similar but colored differnently arent they

picture below is the flying M citabria on the runway at the flying M ranch

and i would agree it would be hard to mistake it, but take it out a ways for viewing ( a tower view for example) and one may not be able to distinguish colors that well, I dont know if i could simulate on flight simulator a tower view of a citabria or not properly with early morning sun in the back ground or higher up to show what im trying to say or not

I do think that as much as Rawley had seen this plane in the past he could recognize it...and to basically dismiss his sighting because people don't think SF would be flying 60-80ft off the deck is not reasonable...

I think his sighting of the aircraft is more credible than the idea it was not SF because of the altitude...

This aircraft was flown the day before by Bob Hoover, probably the best Aerobatic pilot in the world, and he said it was in perfect shape.
