What a (beep) good start... [Re: KenBarbalace]

Skuse me, people, but... (beep) preliminary question: The last transmission from Ron Boychuk was from "south of Spences Bridge"? From exactly over Spences Bridge? Or there has been no transmission at all?

(End of Christmas truce...)

Let us make a list of questions and we will contact the Boychuk family and the Canadian CASARA (civil air search and rescue association ) directly. I believe there is a CASARA member visiting this board. It would be best to not have them receive many emails with the same request. First we need to consolidate the questions. What would we like to know?

Please add to the questions:
When did he take off?
where did he take off?
known stops?
last visual sighting?
known radio transmissions?
flight plan?
?

When did he take off = 2:00pm
Where did he take off from = Revelstoke, BC
Known Stops = Salmon Arm, I think I hear that he refueled there.
Last visual sightings = Salmon Arms, (I think)
Known radio transmissions = (Unknown)
Flight plan = no, no flight plan was filed.

If I was to make that trip I would try to stay close to a VFR course, VFR for you non-pilots is Visual Flight Rules, For you private pilots out there I would do a IFR, (I follow Roads). Stay were you can keep the road insight at least.
That means I would follow RT #1 down to Salmon Arms and probably down to Merritt.
The question is from Merritt down to his destination. Following Rt #1 would take him off a direct route, (straight across).

I'll take another look and give you my best-guess later.

Merry Christmas.

Here's my best guess, BUT a lot of this is only an educated guess.
According to the Boychuk web site he refueled at Salmon Arm.
The quess is that he may have headed straight down to Nanaimo from Salmon Arm and thus would have bypassed Merritt. I read someplace that he was well known at both Salmon Arm and Merritt, Plus it was already getting late.

At 110 mph (winds unknown) from Revelstoke to Salmon Arm, that's roughtly 60 mile. Counting take-off, climb, decent, and taxi time to refuling, that's about an hour to me. He left Revelstoke after 2:00 pm. That's about 3:00 he gets into Salmon Arm. Leave 30-minutes to refuel and that puts him leaving Samon Arm at between 3:30- 4:00 pm. It's 235.6 mi Salmon Arm to Nanaimo. That's a 3+hour flight in a Cessna 172 depending on wind conditions and direction. That would put him in Nanaimo at around 7:00pm at best. Canada/BC in October that's dark out or getting close.
Those are some of the reasons I think he would have stuck close to the roads and I think he would have headed for Merritt. But those same reasons are why the family thinks he may have headed straight for Nanaimo from Salmon Arm.
As you can see a straight shot from Salmon Arm to Nanaimo crosses a lot of open territory. Also notice that a straight shot brings him close to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) which is Canada's second busiest airport. That means it would be a Class-B air space around it. For you non-pilots out there that means Big airplanes around, small (tiny) Cessnas stay clear. Ron Boychuk would have diverted around Vancouver, probably to the north, so that adds another dimension to our search area.

Sorry about getting so long here but I hope some of this helps.

Can you post a link to the Boychuk website? I need to get up to speed. What you have posted is very helpful. Looks like a long cross country for a 172.

I apologize for insisting... [Re: blue_penguin]
      #1080578 - 12/25/07 06:00 PM

2nd Lieut. Alex Cadieux, a spokesman for the Comox 19 Wing, said "Boychuk’s last known radio transmission was from over Spence’s Bridge". "After that there was no more radio or radar contact," said Cadieux...

Are we soon going to have the preliminary info, or is the circus restarted until Men's magazine brings out the true info in approximately 3 months?

Apparently the imagery area is consistent with a route Revelstoke-Kamloops or more exactly a route Revelstoke - Spences Bridge, as nothing indicates that any report came from Kamloops. I already do not see what we are (beep) doing there if Boychuk had passed Spences Bridge, but I see even less if he had passed Salmon Arm...

(Still in a very bad mood...)

So far I have been unable to locate “Spence’s Bridge.” According to one of the Boychuk web sites, his last known position was 150 km west of Salmon Arms. On a heading of approximately 250 degrees for his destination of Qualicum Airport would put him approximately 22km west of Merritt. At this point he would be 157 miles from his destination. At an estimated ground speed of 110 mph his flight time would be about one hour and 25 minutes.
Looking at the terrain for the first 60 miles of that leg , I would question that he actually flew that route. It is very rough terrain and I would not want to fly over it in a single engine airplane. He probably would follow some roads.

Spences Bridge (50.421108,-121.341499) is 150 km West of Salmon Arm, but attention this absolutely does not mean that this info is true, nor any of the others moreover, it is exactly because of this that I grumble alone since two days...
