The tall ones to the south of the route are ~8000ft..going down 1 would be the safer way but you are then going perpendicular to the wind and in a canyon not a good combination with those winds...I'm searching for the weather info..it might have been part of a post that was deleted..as I recall it wasn't a solid overcast and getting better but will try to find the info...
Here it is... http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1081035/page/0/fpart/16/vc/1

Yes...no further comment necessary....Though I did find out in our area there have been sightings of a Swamp beast..
I might switch back to OpenGL but I downloaded the latest Google Earth I have the option to launch via Direct or Open with the Nov version.

If you leave Revelstoke at 1430 and have an average ground speed of ~70kts(due to head winds), and fly direct to your destination on a course of 228deg, in 1 hr 43min you will be over the exact spot and time the US Border Patrol Aircraft spotted a target, at ~1615.
Radar target believed to be Ron Boychuk last seen near Lytton climbing through 5400 feet and then disappearing. Groundspeed 60 knots. Not verified, not official info. But if you think this (very ?) low speed match for you please ask to Ken to rather link to your post than mine.
You convinced me that Ron Boychuk may have attempted a direct route (I still think that it was not a very good idea, nevertheless...)
Thanks a lot for all of us here.

Hi,
following this thread from page 1, I found no useful weather informations for the day Mr Boychuck went missing. So I searched myself. Here are the weather observations from Vancouver CYVR, October 23, hourly from 5 to 11 UTC (12 to 18 PDT).
CYVR 230500Z 08008KT 12SM OVC026 13/10 A3037 RMK SC8 SLP285
CYVR 230600Z 06009KT 12SM OVC027 13/10 A3038 RMK SC8 SLP288
CYVR 230700Z 06010KT 10SM OVC027 13/10 A3038 RMK SC8 SLP288
CYVR 230800Z 07006KT 10SM FEW018 BKN026 OVC046 13/11 A3037 RMK SF2SC5SC2 SLP286
CYVR 230900Z 06007KT 10SM BKN029 BKN034 OVC046 13/11 A3037 RMK SC5SC2SC2 SLP283
CYVR 231028Z 07008KT 10SM -SHRA BKN032 OVC049 13/ RMK SC5SC3
CYVR 231100Z 06005KT 10SM SCT032 OVC056 13/10 A3033 RMK SC4SC4 SLP272
For the non-pilots. Generaly low winds 5 to 10Kts from 060 to 080 and a low ceiling. From 12 to 14 PDT overast cloud layer at 2600 to 2700 ft over CYVR (nearly sealevel). In the late afternoon lifting up to 5000+ft (read: getting better).
Note: These are the observations from Vancouver. They are not representative for the whole route Mr Boychuck flew. They are for information only.
No good weather for a mountain trip. It is possible that around noon, most ridges were in clouds. The tendency to become better in the late afternoon could be the reason for the late departure of Mr Boychuck.
If it helps, I can try to get some aviation weather information from other locations enroute.
Joe
Joe,
Sorry you have it backwards...you subtract 7 hours from UTC to get local Vancouver, BC local time...or Add 7 hours to local time to get UTC on October 23rd..
This is nice except this weather is only up to 1100Z time on the 23rd...that is 0400 Local time in Vancouver,BC and not and indication of what the weather might be like at 1800 Local...if you have more or the location you found this please post...

I was evaluation a report on InternetSar that pointed to a location where I couldn't see anything of interest (just like vanaj). Looking some more I saw this......and it needs more critical eyes IMO. The report is at http://internetsar.org/searches/boychuk/...ll&startr=0
I have come across one too...although it's in the old overlay and looks more like big foot (aka Vanaj).
old_overlay
I don't know, aren't these objects a little too white? Boychuk's plane is more brown and orange.

OK...why not just quote directly to your post ???
And 60kts ground speed is not unusual..especially with those kinds of headwinds...
In cruise he would be moving through the airmass at 110kts..but the airmass is moving the opposite direction he is...the ground speed would be the True airspeed minus the head wind value. In strong winds you can actually go backwards without turning around.

I was giving an example of other objects that were similar but also in older overlays.
