Thanks for the thoughts...should pass that on the the Fossett/Boychuk families...

Re: Calculation for Ron's Flight Path. [Re: vanaj]

Your calculations are probably right, however Ron's plane could of gone down 3.1 miles from Revelstoke. One radar report/sighting near Spences Bridge could be anything from another plane in area, to a Penguin with ruffled feathers! One 'beep! bird' or tracked all the way? Guess that factual info about this report is in the pipeline?
Other airplanes in area at the time?
No flight plan common in area?
Area generally busy with air traffic?
Traffic operating from unlicenced fields?
Normal pos reporting ops for the area?
Just questions, although i tend to agree with your synopsis.

Regards all, happy new year.

NB: Make me happy? A result on the fate of two missing people and the hope that 2008 doesnt bring us anything more to look at.

Please read the type of radar it was again...and birds usually don't show up on radar unless they are in a flock..and they don't fly in straight lines.

Another plane..but going on the same track from Revelstoke to CAT4 with the same GS and time ??

The only bird that might have been in this area able to reach those speeds is the Peregrine Falcon.

Now on the Endangered Species List, many have taken up residence in cities living on tall building and feeding on the easy prey of pigeons in the area.

But then again it would not show up on radar by it's self.

Joe,

Sorry you have it backwards...you subtract 7 hours from UTC to get local Vancouver, BC local time...or Add 7 hours to local time to get UTC on October 23rd..

This is nice except this weather is only up to 1100Z time on the 23rd...that is 0400 Local time in Vancouver,BC and not and indication of what the weather might be like at 1800 Local...if you have more or the location you found this please post...

Yes vanaj,

your absolutely right! My mistake.

This should fit 14 to 18 PDT.

Thanks so much for the info...fills in a gap...the weather in Vancouver was very much a VFR day...and weather would not have been a problem with the closest clouds 3,000ft above the ceiling of an older C172...

Thanks again..

So we can assume Ron would have gone the straight line under those weather conditions? Assuming some more that it actually was the C172 on the radar at Spences Brigde.... now what? We don't have imagery of that area west of Frazer River and the Route #1, right?

In this case......well...back to counting snow patches on the imagery to the east and sage brushes in Nevada, I guess.

Hi Jim,

I agree with you. Weather should not be a problem.
I personally would also fly the direct route.

In this case, most of the flight over the mountains should be covered by radar.
It would be interesting to know, were the radar trace endet.
Was he decending (forced to decend) at this time?

Joe

Since the Radar Sight/track was from US Border Patrol Aircraft and I believe they might be a little short on information and capabilities of that equipment so that information might be considered a little sensitive at this time.

My personal feeling is that 8500 would be a minimum altitude for this direct route of flight passing Lytton, before this there are many valleys and lower terrain that would allow a lower altitude.

But then again the fuel consumption is lower at higher altitudes and with thiner air the plane has less drag and you would see high true airspeeds a big factor when flying into a headwind.

Hi Jim,

the winds are also higher at altitude.
You can speed up a few knots, when not flying too high in headwinds.
Mr Boychuck wants to reach his destination within SS+30.
