Looking at the Boychuk family web page map of the search area indicates that the Highway one route has been searched as well as to the north and west of Lytton. What is absent on that map is the area west of Revelstoke. Ron’s statement that his dad was last seen “heading west from Revelstoke toward 3 valley gap" is revealing because apparently in the minds of the Boychuk family that very well could be his last know position. That fact is probably the reason that they consider the area west of Revelstoke to be an area that we should examine thoroughly and I can see the logic in that.

This is a similar impression that I got from my emails with the friend of the family that originally asked us to help them.

Maybe this is the most important piece of information we need as to why we are looking where we are. Maybe by completing a really careful review of the imagery we have been given, we can give them the peace of mind to know that this area was investigated to the best of our abilities. We know how frustrating it is when we think there are better places to investigate. Imagine how frustrating it must be for the family if they think a certain area is not getting enough attention. Regardless of our personal opinion of where the best search areas are. I think we should also work with families of missing pilots to investigate areas that they believe to be of the most interest. It is after all for their peace of mind that we do this.

I agree. It has taken a week for me to arrive at that conclusion and the best information has been the email from Jon.

If Boychuk was heading toward Three Valley Gap then he was probably following Highway 1 and would continue on until the Spense Bridge area where he could have turned south. According to the search map, all of the flying searches were to the west of Kamloops so Highway 1 to the east toward Revelstoke should be examined thoroughly. That is almost two hundred miles of road and if anywhere along that route, Boychuk encountered bad weather in the form of low ceiling and visibility he could have gotten into trouble trying to cope with it. An experience instrument rated pilot would have pulled up and climbed on top and switched to an IFR flight plan where he could have radar vectors and letdown assistance. Not being instrument rated is where a lot of private pilots get into trouble. It takes a great deal of training to be able to immediately transition from visual flying to attitude instruments when you go into a “white out” (into a cloud) condition.

NEED FEEDBACK: How many times to evaluate a report [Re: KenBarbalace]
      #1085873 - 01/02/08 09:31 AM

Right now, every submitted report gets evaluated by seven report evaluators before it is put to bed or passed on to our senior evaluator.

Looking at the growing list of reports to be evaluated, however, it appears that we do not yet have enough evaluators to stay on top of reports if each report has to be evaluated seven times. What do people think is a sufficient number of times to evaluate a report?

Should I leave it at 7 or should I reduce it to 6? Please keep in mind that it takes an average score of 1 (out of 0-4) for a report to be sent up to our senior evaluator. The idea was that it would take at least two people to score a report high or everyone to give a report a score of at least one before it got passed on.

BC media lighting up my phone all day [Re: KenBarbalace]
      #1085898 - 01/02/08 10:04 AM

There is an article in a Vancouver newspaper today featuring InternetSAR.org (I have not seen it yet), which is causing my phone to be ringing like crazy with other Vancouver based media outlets. For those in that area, CBC Radio will be interviewing myself and John Boychuk at around 10:30am Vancouver time and then this afternoon at 4:30pm CKNW (I think) will be interviewing me live on their World Today program.

As a result of the media coverage we are seeing another spike in new members so we should expect another surge of imagery reports that need to be evaluated. At last check there were around 40 reports in each search effort that needed to be reviewed. If you are a report evaluator, please take some time from requesting regular imagery assignments and help review reports so that we don't get completely buried.

As of this moment in time, we now have over 1,100 members on InternetSAR.org.

I just got off the phone interview with CBC Radio, which also had John Boychuk on the line.

The first thing I'd like to share with folks is just how appreciative John Boychuk and the rest of the Boychuk family is for all of your efforts. They are very overwhelmed by all of the help and support.

What was the most important thing I took from the interview was that John said that the last confirmed contact with Ron Boychuk was at the Revelstoke airport. He did say that there was a possible radar hit (by maybe an U.S. Air Force aircraft flying border patrol) on some aircraft in the vicinity of Suspense Bridge but John seemed very unconvinced by that report and indicated that the identity of the radar hit was not confirmed.

Hopefully Greg's investigation will provide more insight into the radar hit in the near future.

Wait, 4:30 pm who's time? Will it air on any website?

4:30 Pacific/7:30 Eastern

I think it is the same radio station that interviewed me last week, but I'm not positive. I think it is another parallel interview with Jon Boychuk, just like my interview earlier today.

Thanks, RebelRob. How about the one that was on this morning? Is that available online, too? That was a different station, right?
