How to use scale in Google Earth

I am using a German version of GE. So I hope the functions are available for all language. So I have a question:

Is there a chance I could set the scale like 1cm:1000m or 1cm:2km? and it's use in the 2D map not the 3D overview.


I need the scale to calculate distance in another program so there's a lot of help if I can set the scale that I mentioned above.

Hi hurly,

GE itself does not have that ability. But you can use a free screen ruler utility. Use GE's ruler to set a length on GE and then adjust the altitude with mouse's right button according to the screen ruler.

Then, you can save the image via the File menu. Theoretically, this method must work but check the printout or saved-image to be sure.

Go to View>scale legend. check the box.

I use the MeasureIT Firefox addon to check the number of pixels on screen. After that see how many does your monitor display in an inch and do the calculations.
