I've taken the liberty to move the second Detroit, MI border crossing from where it sat in Windsor, ONT, to the approximate location of the Detroit-Windsor tunnel where it crosses the border under the Detroit River. I've also added a link to the tunnel's official website, which has practical and historic/technical information posted. I tried to put the locator icon under the river, but to no avail I've never tried to change a .kmz file in this way before, so I'm not sure the results will automatically propogate to future downloaders. Any comments or help on sharing updated files appreciated!

Good cheer!

The one of the crossings in St. Stephen, NB & Calais, ME is mixed up. One leads no where (on the river bank) while the actual second crossing (North Street-Milltown) is not indicated.

Not sure if it counts or not, but a combination tunnel and bridge now links Denmark with Sweden. You included a placemark that claimed the Windsor/Detroit tunnel was the only underwater tunnel in the world to cross a border. That may no longer be true.

Arguably the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel continues to be the world's only sub-aqueous international automobile tunnel.

The Tunnel portion of the Oresund crossing is conpletely on the Danish side of the border, and the actual border crossing occurs on the cable stay bridge portion of the Oresung crossing.

But since there's no reason to use the tunnel except to access the bridge, and since the bridge and tunnel together comprise the Oresung Crossing, it can be argued that the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel may have to get used to sharing its title as one of the two.

Hi Rocky,

You have two placemarks for Fort Covington, NY/Dundee QC, but they're both a bit east of the main crossing. I haven't been up there but I'm pretty sure the existing placemarks aren't at controlled crossings.

Anyway, I've attached a placemark to the main crossing -- it's at the site of the former International Hotel, which was famous for spanning the border: http://members.tripod.com/~Carol_Tyo_LaDue/hotel.htm Canadian border control is just north of the border -- 100 yards or so -- and U.S. border control is about a quarter mile down on the southbound side of the road.

Thanks for all the great placemarks!

Point Roberts, Washington, is a unique American town, about 2 miles square and located on the end of a peninsula that juts south from British Columbia. The only land route is a border crossing from Canada. Your map shows the Point Roberts border crossing, but has it a couple of miles south of the border at the end of the peninsula.

But even Google Earth seems to have it wrong! The US/Canada border runs along the 49th parallel, but GE says the crossing is at 49 00 07 N, 123 04 05 W. Since one second of arc on the earth's surface is about 100 feet, GE seems to be off by about 700 feet.

So GE made the US bigger by 700 feet.

Here is another "border crossing" of a very different kind.

The yellow line represents the U S-Mexico border at Guadalupe Canyon, in Arizona a few miles west of New Mexico. To the north of the line is the private road up Guadalupe Canyon in Arizona. To the south is a Mexican farm. About 100 meters north of the farm, you will see an obelisk marking the border, visible by its long NNW shadow. These tall, tapered columns mark the border every mile or so. If you look closely, you can actually see the international boundary as a faint line running E-W through the obelisk. GE shows the boundary as a yellow line, but (at least on my screen) it is placed about 50 meters too far north.

I have put a place marker on a fence that the Mexican farmer built, years ago. It was there when I first visited in 1975, and from the looks of the vegetation it is still there. The farmer built the fence about 20 meters NORTH of the obelisk, effectively annexing a strip of the U S for his goats to graze! The U S Border Patrol comes here frequently, so they must know about it, but they have left the farmer, and his goats, alone.

A marvelous example of free trade in action at the grass roots!
