text from Wikipedia The European Organization for Nuclear Research (French: Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire), commonly known as CERN (see Naming), pronounced [sɝn] (or [sɛʀn] in French), is the world's largest particle physics laboratory, situated just northwest of Geneva on the border between France and Switzerland. The convention establishing CERN was signed on 29 September 1954. From the original 12 signatories of the CERN convention, membership has grown to the present 20 member states. Its main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research. Numerous experiments have been constructed at CERN by international collaborations to make use of them.

The main site at Meyrin also has a large computer centre containing very powerful data processing facilities primarily for experimental data analysis, and because of the need to make them available to researchers elsewhere, has historically been (and continues to be) a major wide area networking hub.

ATLAS - A Toroidal LHC (Generalized)

text from Wikipedia ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) is one of the six particle detector experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, TOTEM, LHCb, and LHCf) currently being constructed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a new particle accelerator at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. When completed, ATLAS will be 46 metres long and 25 metres in diameter, and will weigh about 7,000 tonnes. The project involves roughly 2,000 scientists and engineers at 165 institutions in 35 countries.[1] The construction was scheduled to be completed in June 2007, however is now stated to be mid-2008[2]. The experiment is designed to observe phenomena that involve highly massive particles which were not observable using earlier lower-energy accelerators and might shed light on new theories of particle physics beyond the Standard Model.

Wow Joey....Many times I asked for posts full of information but....I can´t work with this kmz in my PC....The YouTube videos are addictive..... They are amazing. Incredible 3D animations explaining how the machine works and what experiments do. Or will do...

Five colliding globes for you...

An educational experience, Joey. Thanks.

Re: CERN - Alice & CMS [Re: jpwade]

Gerardo, Hill - Thanks for the input, Here are a few additions

Large Ion Collider - Alice (Generalized)

Wikipedia text: ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is one of the six detector experiments being constructed at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It is optimized to study heavy ion collisions. Pb-Pb nuclei collisions will be studied at a centre of mass energy of 5.5 TeV per nucleon. The resulting temperature and energy density are expected to be large enough to generate a quark-gluon plasma, a state of matter wherein quarks and gluons are deconfined.

Compact Muon Solenoid- CMS (Generalized)

Wikipedia text: The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment is one of two large general-purpose particle physics detectors being (as of 2007) built on the proton-proton Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland. Approximately 2600 people from 180 scientific institutes form the collaboration building it. It will be located in an underground chamber at Cessy in France, just across the border from Geneva. The completed detector will be cylindrical, 21 metres long and 16 metres diameter and weigh approximately 12,500 tonnes.

This animation loads quicker and runs much smoother with the new GE release 4.3.7204.0836 (beta).

The Rotation of the points are much smoother

Animations are greatly enhanced with the new GE version.
