Howard Taylor, while working as a solicitor, secured a large sum of money and, together with his wife Gertrude, began construction of an estate on an 82-acre plot fronting the river in the town of Portland. Construction of the Taylor manor home was completed on November 23, 1902.
While the basic architectural design of Saint Clements began with the 16th century castles of Europe, it took a New York architect named Sidney Algernon Bell to put together the various influences and traditions that resulted in the present structure. The roofs of the manor house are influenced by homes in the Bavarian Alps. The long balcony was modeled after the Inn of William the Conqueror at Divers, France.

Bull Run Castle
April 2006- Gilbert Julien is the new owner of Bull Run Castle. Gilbert writes: "The Castle is closed for renovations at this time, but I still give tours when I am there and folks stop by (about four per weekend).
The renovation will probably last take two years and if all goes well, the castle will begin to grow further after that. John has reunited with his childhood sweetheart and now lives in Reading PA.reference:www.roadsideamerica.com

George Boldt, proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City and his family for several summers enjoyed an earlier frame cottage on Hart Island (the original name) which they greatly expanded.
In 1900 the Boldts launched an ambitious construction campaign to build a huge masonry structure, one of the largest private homes in America.
They engaged the architectural firm G. W. & W. D. Hewitt and hundreds of workers for a six-story "castle," a major international landmark. In addition four other masonry structures on the island are architecturally notable.
Equally distinctive is a huge yacht house on a neighboring island where the Boldts had another summer home and a vast estate, incorporating farms, canals, a golf course, tennis courts, stables, and a polo field. From www.wikipedia.com -----------------------------------------
