Madera ilegal de la Amazonia (also in english)

'Route of illegal timber from the Amazon.
This is one of the routes that bring illegal wood from the Amazon to Europe.
The European Union consumes the half of the wood that is exported from the Amazon. In Brazil, it is believed that 80 % of the forest development is illegal... Europe is eating the Amazon forest.
Every eight seconds it destroys an area equivalent to a football pitch (more than 3 km2 an hour). The rhythm of the deforestation: 43 trees per second, that is to say, 3,700,000 trees a day.

In the attachment there are seen the trunks piled up in several European ports.'

Thanks Imp for translation.

Lime and sand.
According to IBAMA, Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, results of 17 great operations in the Amazon, since 2003:
Seizure of about 1 million m3 of timber and hundreds of tractors, trucks and chainsaws used in illegal deforestation. Approximately $ 3 billion in fines.
Imprisonment of 650 people: 121 servers of IBAMA, other 19 public servants and 510 loggers and lobbyists. And about 1500 companies dismantled.

Cracking Down on Illegal Logging

BUT DEFORESTATION -legal and illegal- CONTINUES. And moreover...
Amazon rainforest defender in the Brazilian government Marina Silva has resigned. It seems the obstacles are so great that she can not continue doing her job. Ibama's president, Bazileu Alves Margarido Neto, also tendered his resignation. Bad news for environment.

Candidates of PT in 1986: Marina Silva, today ex-Environment minister, then candidate for federal deputy, Hélio Pimenta (deceased), Chico Mendes(assassinated in 1988), Matias (deceased) and Francisca Marinheiros.

Hello erreka

Thanks for an enlightening, well-illustrated post! Regarding the resignation of Marina Silva...

Indeed. It's the kind of cause that gets people killed - just one price of the resource frenzy in South America and Africa. The combination of extreme poverty in the southern hemisphere and high demand in the north is a powerful one. So awfully discouraging - the ones who are hungry are not going to stop working for illegal logging or mining operations. And it seems the ones who consume will have difficulty slowing down their demand. Overpopulation could guarantee failure on both hemispheres.

Keep informing us! It is encouraging that the environment has become a popular topic of conversation.

Best wishes,
Diane

Thanks for your compliments, Diane. Let me deal it with Imp and Greenpeace.
If you want, you can see another post on the mahogany illegal trade El oro rojo de Madre de Dios . Sorry but it´s only in the language of Cervantes because I am not mastered in English, yet.

Note: your new look is fine. Read you soon.

Look at this map about forest loss.

If the net forest loss of all territories between 1990 and 2000 is summed, 31% occurred in South America, and 21% was in Asia Pacific. Worldwide, territories with net forest loss lost 1.33 million km2 of forest over this ten year period. Despite this, South America was the region with the largest forested area in the world in 2000. The more forest area there is, the more it is possible to lose.

Japan is unexceptional, having neither forest loss nor forest growth from 1990 to 2000.

The area of Africa covered by forest was reduced by 550 000 km2 in the 1990s. This includes the loss of forests that covered 11.4% of Zambian land.

Territory size shows the proportion of worldwide net forest loss that occurred there between 1990 and 2000.

"Indonesia is blessed with some of the most extensive and biologically diverse tropical forests in the world. But the tragedy is that Indonesia has one of the highest rates of tropical forest loss in the world." E.G. Togu Manurung, 2006

Worldmapper: The world as you´ve never seen it before Worldmapper is a collection of world maps, where territories are re-sized on each map according to the subject of interest. There are now nearly 600 maps.
