I am probably going to start another thread in the future as I can no longer edit my original post (says it is too old).

As the project currently stands, I have removed all references to Turkey, as I've gotten hate mail as a result of it, though I am still trying to grasp as to how people would find something like this offensive- this isn't the first place people will turn to find information.

I am not pushing for separatism, and trust me, if I was, I wouldn't choose Google Earth of all places to push for it. I was simply writing up on the region when there was little to be seen in those areas back then. Now there are more indexes and Panoramio shots of the areas, which I think makes my collection able to be complemented by other people's contributions in areas that I am lacking.

I am still trying to pinpoint the exact location of the Xhanas ruins, which some of you may've seen. It was on the old road to Duhok to Akre (not the new one that people go through now), along the mountains close to a stream.

And I reiterate- I only know English and some Kurdish- I do not know Turkish so please do not try to talk to me with it. I won't understand it (and even if I did, I have a feeling it would probably be a flame). I also need to make a point that I am not PKK or a related group- my grandfather was killed by them in the 90s when they tried to go into Iraq, so I do not appreciate being called a part of them. In my mind, they betrayed the Kurdish movement by resorting to terrorism to achieve their means and harm fellow Kurds, so do not bring them into this page.

All this is are descriptions of the places with some history. I am not being pushed by "nationalistic" or "seperatist" thoughts, but it is common knowledge that the vast majority of the region is populated by Kurds with exclaves of Christains and Turkomen, and the Arabs, Turks, and Iranians who live in the larger cities of those nations. But Iin my travels, I didn't find many of them living in more interior areas like Selahaddin or Akre, only in the large cities like Hawler and Duhok did I find some people aside from Kurds.

I removed any references to the Turkish cities due to the consistant pestering I've had, as I mentioned before. I doubt this'll solve the problem but it'll at least reduce the intensity from which this comes. Even if I was able to, it was pure hell to even do anything in that region without having to worry about the Police or the security forces bothering us.

Pending attachment is a slightly revised and updated version of the Placemarks- I've corrected some grammarical errors, revised some history, and removed redundant statements. I just need to see if I attach to this post if it will mess up the previous ones I have attached.

I found all these mountains in eastern Turkey. I didn't even mark all of them. Could all the small earthquakes in the area have something to do with their formation?

Hello MercZ -

I have enjoyed your thread and would like to add to the commentary a bit. I notice that those who are annoyed by your post are one- or two-time posters, their only contribution being a reply to yours. So, I guess I'd like to address them as well as you - but, it's not as if they're still around! (To give credit where it is due, one person replied with a reasoned explanation for disliking the word "Kurdistan." I have to say, I don't disagree with him - or her.)

I read many posts that indirectly display the political or social leanings of the writer and have written a few of my own. When doing certain types of posts, it is very difficult to remain detached and edit out any hint of one's point of view. I think that's one entertaining aspect of the forums, this tension or struggle to remain neutral. And, since I have a fairly good brain, I am able to read something I disagree with and retain a flexible attitude and sense of humor without insisting someone conform to my choice of words. (Usually. )

Rigid nationalism and regionalism don't belong in the GE Community. I think that forms the core of GE culture. Google Earth is headquartered in a country where there are many points of view on every topic under the sun, and where we all get to speak them out loud or in print. So, it seems inevitable that this important part of American culture would spill into the Community forums, as do influences from other cultures. Those who are troubled by this might learn something new from the other cultures that comprise the Community membership, but if learning is not what draws them to log on, then perhaps there is another format that would be a better fit. There is no shortage of chat rooms and blogs where there is either unanimous agreement on an issue, or where it is customary to engage in hate mail-type responses.

My acquaintences on these forums have taught me more about their parts of the world than I would ever have the time to learn on my own. As for far-off places, I recently put together a post about the Marsh Arabs of Iraq - certainly not my own cultural background, but one that interests me a great deal. No doubt I will offend someone at some time because of a choice of words, pictures, or interpretation of reading material. So far, no hate mail (other kinds of weird mail, yes) and I hope it stays that way. To all of you "hit and run" posters, a reasoned and informed rebuttal is the more intelligent way to go.

Best regards,
Diane

Do you know where "Pir Daud - 20 minutes distance from Arbeel international Airport" is. I cannot find it in google earth or wikimapia.

I have attached another version of my project in my original post. I am going through them a lot to fix the editing from time to time, as well as making sure pictures are still attached properly.

I have one question though- how does one embed the picture as a thumbnail? This would help a lot in making my windows more clean and easy to read.

@Diane: I don't really mean much with it, and I can see why people get offended by it. I don't think GE deserves those kinds of users, but thankfully those times seem to have subsided.

@Pir Duad: I'm not quite sure what you are asking about.

Hi

As you are using Photobucket, just follow the instructions here: How do I make a Clickable Thumbnail?. Once you have the code, use the first option for your placemarks, and the third one if you want to put thumbnails in your post.

You can also resize the photos before uploading them to photobucket, or specify the size in the placemark, for example
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v456/MercZ/Kurdistan/Hawler/DSC00681.jpg" width="400">
but you can't do that in the post

Thanks, I'm currently going through the posts again. When I first started doing this photobucket didn't have the option available, at least not for my free acount.
