Network link & KML file.
      #1177775 - 05/27/08 10:21 AM

I'm having a hard time finding this. I've searched everywhere I can think of in the GE Community, but still ahve not come up with the answer I'm looking for.

A forum that I belong to had a great idea of creating a members map. I thought that GE could be fun to use with this since we have members all across the globe, so I started digging around to see if it could be capable of it. I ran accross information about the KML fils a read something about network links being URL hosted. So I started creating a simple placemark KML file and saved it out. Uploaded the file onto a FTP site and told GE where to go get the file. Now I'm using the simple GE interface since I have zero knowledge of coding. The KML file does have the web address where the file located as the listed network link, but if I make a change to the file the GE does not look for the update. Either after the 5 minute refresh exiting and restarting the program.

My basic thought was that I could load placemarks for people, place the file on a FTP site, and then when people would go into GE the file would update and everyone could see our user locations.

So my questons are:
1) Can GE even do this?
2) Am I missing a simple command that will solve everything?
3) Should I go find someone who can code it to add the hyperlink to make it work?
4) How do I fix it?
5) Am I in over my head with this?

Thanks for any help everyone can offer.

It should work. Here is example of simple network link that does nothing but load file called dummy.kml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.2">
<NetworkLink>
<name>Dummy</name>
<visibility>0</visibility>
<open>1</open>
<Url>
<href>http://www.gelib.com/dummy/dummy.kml</href>
</Url>
</NetworkLink>
</kml>

WHenever GE refreshes, it will reload dummy.kml.

One thing though, I'm pretty sure it won't work on FTP. Must by http.

Thanks Matt,

I was able to use that script and get it to work.

I'm only using the FTP site to transfer files to their end location. So it works out great.

Now I just need to figure out why the person helping me with testing it is getting a syntex error in the network link. Could using an older version of GE cause this?

Thanks again,
