Re: The Fall of the Dyerville Giant [Re: A30]

They Dyerville giant was hit by another tree that went down in a nasty winter storm. Sequoia Sempervirens (coast redwoods) don't like high winds. I spent part of my life in the area and was familiar with this tree going down. The local ranger who lived about a mile away reported that he heard the tree hit the ground, thus giving creedence to the old term "if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around, does it make a sound?"

There was another tree in the 80s across the river from the Dyerville giant called the "General Sherman" that was estimated at 372 feet at one point. The top 10 feet of it had died out, thus it lost it's top spot.

The current "hidden" tree is near Orick, CA. And it's not even hidden, really, you can pick it out from the road. And it may not even be the tallest. There are more than a few of those trees at that stratospheric height.
