Text problems
      #1188058 - 06/14/08 12:18 PM

I know this is probably the wrong forum, but does anyone know why my text all goes all illegible on GE? Is it a video card problem? Usually i have to close GE and restart it to get it working properly again. Sorry I'm not very techy

Thanks

Try switching your video renderer from OpenGL to DirectX or vis a versa. You can do that in Tools>options> 3D viewer tab. Then restart GE.

Groovy:

I do not think you should delete this post. Other people also sometimes have problems with Google Earth, and it is useful to be able to compare these occurrences.

I use GE on multiple machines, and it has crashed one or more times on most of them.

On one of the machines at work, it started to happen immediately every time upon starting Google Earth. The graphics would go crazy, and GE would crash. The machine needed a new graphics card.

On another machine, the graphics occasionally become scrambled, then usually correct themselves, but once in a while I have to restart GE.

On the laptop I am using right now, GE crashed once out of the hundreds of times I have used it, and I had to reboot the machine.

In computer classrooms where I have students use GE, machines occasionally lock up and have to be rebooted.

But these represent a few incidents out of many sessions, so I think of most of them as minor annoyances that are part of daily life (aside from the ailing graphics card). The vast majority of the sessions go without incident.

Does the text problem occur during most of your sessions?

This strategy has sometimes succeeded for me, and sometimes not. It's definitely worth a try.

Hi Lucia and Java

I've tried switching to Open GL before but it made GE go really slow. However, I tried it tonight and it's working quite smoothly!? I thought ( I read somewhere) that Open GL doesn't work properly with certain (well mine!)intel grapics cards , so I never really gave it a chance.

That's exactly what I have to keep doing, it's really annoying , but this all started before GE 4.3, so it's not ( I don't think) a new problem.

Thanks alot Lucia and Java for your help.

ps On GE 4.3 has anyone noticed that if you zoom right in (automatically tilt while zooming has to be disabled), you end up being spat out at the North Pole?

I have not been able to make that happen, but it sounds like fun. Should I use the mouse wheel or the zoom slider?

The mouse wheel Java, you also have to be directly over (no tilt). I've just tried it in the States and Australia, but it doesn't seem to work. It works in Africa and Europe. Mind you, this may just be my computer going crazy! (but has only occured since 4.3) You'll see your 'eye alt' go crazy to - (minus) thousands of feet, then you're in space!

Groovy:

Thank you for the important geographic distinction. Yes, it did work in Africa and Europe, after having failed in the US.

It's quite reassuring to observe, through scientifically designed experimentation, that some cultural differences persist in the face of rapid globalization.

It's fortunate that you resisted your original inclination to delete this thread. Just think about what the Google Earth Community would have missed!

Groovy:

I have just opened the placemark, located in Kenya, from this post in GE 4.3 on a Macintosh, and tried to get a close look at it using the zoom slider. You'll be reassured to know that GE is consistent across platforms, and faithfully spat me out at the North Pole, as I should have expected.

Java

Yes, I did the same thing (again)!

That was a hilarious thread

Watch out for your thread later, I have an interesting photo regarding the subject!

BTW Thanks Lucia, your solution sorted the problem!
