Google Earth Community: Hank Williams Family First Home

Elonzo Huble Williams, known as 'Lon,' or 'Lonnie' and Jessie Lillybelle Skipper, known as 'Lillie.' arrived at the Mixon home near Garland Alabama in 1920 and told family members they wanted to get married. Several of the eleven Mixon kids took them up to Mount Olive Church about eight miles southwest of Georgina, Alabama, where the preacher performed the impromptu marriage,. With no place to spend the night, the Mixon kids took them back home where they celebrated their honeymoon night. The following morning Mixon father, George Mixon, offered them a farm house he owned across the road and they lived there until finding a larger place down the road toward Mount Olive Church, where Hiram (Hank) Williams was born in 1923.

Over the years the farm house was home to several families until it was abandoned in the 1960's and became overgrown with vines and forgotten. It was discovered again in 2008 when a Mixon grandchild reviewing interview tapes of the Mixon children uncovered the long forgotten story. A search of the site turned up the abandoned and hidden house. The trees were cleared away and plans are to restore it as a the landmark.
