I was browsing main index and went to Travel Information and your post 'those interested with Istanbul.'
Since this is my first google-earth view of Istanbul, I decided to veer from your markings and went looking for the blue mosque, hagia sophia and topkapi palace.
I was surprised that they are all in the same part of Istanbul and I know these are all magnificent structures...but the topkapi palace especially is a dissapointment in this that there are just too many placemarks and paramio photos' marks and a proper view of the palace is almost impossible.
You should see that some system is possible to be put into effect by which all the placemarks and paramio marks can be clustered one on the other in one corner of such views so that the ariel view is not cluttered with so many markings.(If one temporarily deletes the placemarks-earth community placemarks etc than the info becomes very limited)
I was surprised to find that TOP in the word topkapi means cannon....this is the same word for cannon in persian(?) I am not very sure, but top(pronounced-toap) is used in all the languages of north India to mean cannon!

The easiest way to work with the layers is to zoom near the area that you are interested in, expand the GEC layers menu and turn the individual sub-layers on and off one by one to identify the structures and read more information on them.

As LuciaM tells, the best way to navigate GE is to keep the GEC layers off and rely on the other official placemarks. GEC placemarks can be off their point and too many. Better to use them to find extra info or for fun when you have no problem to have that many placemarks.

It is also stated in the FAQ.

(You can rely on my my placemarks, too, and also many others')

I dont know how the word "top" has entered to the vocabulary. But I know powder was invented by the Chinese. As a canonpowder, it was first used at the 1268-1279 battles between Mongolians and the Song Dynasty.

In the same century, the Arabians immitated it. Maybe, the name "top" comes from somewhere there; Persia or somewhere of one of the lost clans.

"Top" also means "ball" in Turkish. I have never been able to build a relation. But maybe because the artillery looks like a ball if it is a Turkish word.

Tech,

finally I'll will be able to navigate Istanbul on GE or when I visit the town again. Excellent work! Thank you.

I thought some of my posts were too large, now I know how to do it right.

Best wishes for the New Year

Merhaba justuur,

Aslında orduevini değil, önemli gördüğüm parkları işaretlemiştim. Kaba yerleştirmeden sonra, orayı düzelttiğimi hatırlıyorum. GE'nin hata verip kapandığı anlardan birine denk gelmiş olmalı.
Teşekkürler

I personally think your insertion: "This is for those interested with Istanbul" before the actual definition of the location is unnecessary AND is grammatically wrong, for that matter. If you really need to use such a preamble, which I think is totally superfluous, the correct usage should be "This is for those interested IN Istanbul" .

Best Regards.
