Remarks: Best viewed in Google Earth.
Google Maps doesn't show all the placemarkers and the displays error message that "Parts of http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/... could not be displayed because it is too large." Furthermore the icons colour and size are also not being shown correctly. ___________________________________________________

Y Ravine Cemetery (Few locations were already placemarked on GE but due to imagery update some placemarkers have shifted. For completeness of the folder and correcting the shift I thought it prudent to duplicate these.)
Since the GE map of the area is still not in very high resolution I have identified actual locations using http://www.geoportail.fr and have also added detailed aerial views obtained from this portal.
For final identification of names and description, my main source of information has been the web site of Commonwealth War Graves Commission http://www.cwgc.org. However I could not have proceeded in the matter without the maps and description given in;I have also referred to following as my source of information; Acknowledgments: I am thankful to;- John Luke who helped me identify the area, - Hill who guided me to combine the cluttered placemarks into a folder, - Brent Whittam (http://ww1cemeteries.com) who helped me differentiate between Authuille Cemetery/Blighty Valley Cemetery, - Commonwealth War Graves Commission (Mrs. Jackie Withers, Enquiries Section) for confirming the location of Authuille Cemetery, - Sean Byrne of Newfoundland who helped me identify the exact location of 29th Division Memorial, - Martin (http://www.tyneside-scottish.co.uk) who pin-pointed the exact location of Tyneside Scottish and Irish Memorial - La Boisselle, and - Noisette who deserves a special thanks, without whose encouraging words I would not have come so far. Special Note: The historical details, information regarding number of burials etc has been generally taken from the web site of CWGC. It is however suggested that for any research/historical work, the actual CWGC web page be referred. I have added, in the description field of the placemarkers, the relevant link to CWGC web page of all the cemeteries and a few memorials.
Edit Note: Although the CWGC web site gives quite comprehensive data but it suffers from lack of Cemetery Index. This shortcoming, to a great extent, has been overcome by Duncan MacLeod in his web site - http://www.purecollector.com/history/cwgc/index.html, which helped me in identifying the new Cemeteries/memorials missed by me earlier. The present additions could not have been possible without the index given in this web site.

Thank you Noisette for your encouraging words. I am not an historian and accidentally landed in this region while doing 'Ulster/Helen Tower' post for 'Fun and Games'.
Prior to this, my only major exposure to this Great War was "All Quiet on the Western Front" which I had read long long ago and for me, at that time, it was just a sad story about a war fought in a distant land. However as I now read various web pages about WW-1, the power of internet brought me closer to the horrors of the war. The death of more than one million innocent lives in the trenches at Somme is a painful example of war's futility.
I also found that most of the cemeteries in the region were not placemarked on GE so I made a post about few and on Hill's suggestion clubbed these into a folder.
There are many more cemeteries in the region which have not been placemarked on GE and I am now thinking that gradually I may include all such unmarked places in the folder. You have very rightly said - it will be my memorial to those brave men and the tragic events of that time.

The original folder posted on April 16, 2007 has been enlarged and following cemeteries have now been added. Ancre British Cemetery Authuille Cemetery Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension Aveluy Wood Cemetery Blighty Valley Cemetery Hamel Cemetery Lonsdale Cemetery I have tried my best to identify and mark the correct location. However in case there is any discrepancy please inform me through this forum or by email jamalmasood<at>gmail.com. (Don't forget to replace <at> with @.)
I am thinking of including atleast all the Somme region cemeteries.
While a great deal of written/pictorial information about the cemeteries is available on WWW, I find that there are hardly any map(s) giving the location of the cemeteries. Although maps of battlefields are available but these do not serve the purpose. There are so many cemeteries in the area that it is tough identifying these correctly from description alone. Till now I had a basic reference map (given above) for initial identification of the cemeteries/memorial but going will be difficult now.
Although the memorials and very few cemeteries have been placemarked but most of the cemeteries are yet to be placemarked. I am trying to purchase a Road Atlas recently published by Michelin for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which shows the Cemeteries and Memorials in Belgium and Northern France. However it is on 1:200,000 scale. In case any reader of this community is aware of any online map then please let me have the details to enable me to proceed smoothly with the project.

I have added today 43 new cemeteries around the Somme region of Northern France. Some more will follow in due course. It has been a daunting task without any detailed map, but I am happy that I could get useful information on WWW.
After completing the Cemeteries I plan to take up the memorials, which being smaller in size are more difficult to locate. I may eventually mark up only the large one and leave out the small ones - any way I will try to cover as many as possible.

I have added today 70 new cemeteries and 16 new memorials located in the Somme and nearby region. This folder is now more or less complete. However, in case I have missed some cemetery/memorial especially in the Somme region, then please let me know the name and I will add it in the folder.

Sorry for belated reply. I read your request today only.
At present I am not planning to update the folder and if at a later date I update it then I may include Ecoivres Military Cemetery. However please note that I had originally planned to include only the Somme region but later expanded it a bit. Your request is about 10 miles north of Northern most point placemarked by me and if I include your request then I will have to include the cemeteries which lay in between. I am trying to get a detailed map of the area and if I succeed I may re-start the task.
I would therefore suggest that you place mark the same independently and if I expand the folder upto this point then I will also include it. If you need any help in placemarking please donot hesitate to ask.

I have added today 104 new cemeteries and 6 new memorials located in the Somme and nearby region.
The Ecoivres Military Cemetery is quite north of Northern most point placemarked by me but I have also added it in this folder on special request of of AllanKissack.
At present I do not plan to search for any more cemeteries in this region but will gladly add if any member gives me the details of missing ones or wishes to include some specific cemetery in this folder.
