Ireland in 1898

During 1898 an Irishman, John F Finerty, returned to Ireland, having emigrated in the 1864, to the United States. During his trip, he took over 400 photographs all over the island. On his return to the US, he published, through the J. S. Hyland Publishing Company, a book to inform the Irish living in the US as to the current state of Ireland, and also to attract tourists to Ireland.

Ireland in 1898 was still a part of the British Empire and this is reflected in some of the placenames. And for this presentation, I have left the names as they appeared in the book and for this I make no apologies.

Names and places that have since changed names are as follows

  • Kings County is now Offaly (photos number 35, 318 & 368)
  • Queenstown is now Cobh (photos number 88, 158, 188, 212, 307, 311 & 367)
  • Kingstown is now Dun Laoghaire (photos number 94, 114 & 336)
  • George Street, Limerick is now O'Connell Street
  • Wellesley Bridge, Limerick is now Sarsfield Bridge
  • Kingsbridge Terminius is now Heuston Station

Help is wanted to precisely locate the following locations

  • 50 Giants Head Rock, Portrush, Co. Antrim
  • 64. The Moat of Ballylochloe, Co. Westeath
  • 173. Rossbeg Co. Mayo

Some locations could not be accurately placed. So I have taken liberties with the following photos and placed them in random locations in the right area.
  • 73. Carrying Home "Turf"
  • 143. Corracle on the River Boyne
  • 180. Donkey and Block-Wheeled Cart, Carrickfergus
  • 204. The Scots Guards, Dublin
  • 285. Passenger Train, En Route, Dublin
  • 348. Linen Factory, Belfast

Eviction scenes

Photos number 19, 33, 46, 66, & 128 are all placed in the Vandeleur Estate, Kilrush, Co. Clare. The written text for photo 46 states "Vandeleur tenant". I placed all the eviction photos in a rural location outside Kilrush Co. Clare for this purpose. But this location may not be the Vandeleur estate, so if any body has more details please send a Private Message or reply to this post.

Instead of 400 placemarks opening at once when you download the file, I have divided the presenation into 8 folders of 50, each folder containing a network link to my files. This presentation was created using the Google Earth Outreach spreadsheet application. The advantage is that, should I have to relocate any photos, the changes will be available when I update my files (to anybody who has downloaded the file to their computer)

I also recommend that you turn on the Panaramio layer to compare the Ireland then and now.

A fascinating trip back in time with well crafted content. B&W photos at least for me can often better capture the mood of a place. Good job, Noel!

from me too Noel. Absolutely fascinating, and really well presented. Did you submit it to the KML gallery?

Noel,

I am the librarian who supervised the project of getting Finerty up on the web for Quinnipiac. I have begun studying the process of making KMLs so I could link back to our files from Google Maps and Earth, but it appears that you've already done the work. I'll keep studying KML for purposes of linking our other projects (Minute book images from Killarney and Kenmare). Absolutely sensational work here. We'll link back to it from the main site.
