on august 26th, 2003, at 2 am, the dike broke on this spot and washed away the rural lower parts of the dike. around 2000 people were evacuated but could come back later that evening.

how could it happen? the dike was mainly built out of bog which have the tendency to act like a sponge and hold water in wet periods, but the warm and dry summer evaporated the water completely causing the soil to become too light for the rainfall in august and caused a 60 meter long part of the dike to collapse.
