Crazy Horse Memorial, the world's largest sculpture, now in progress, is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota on US Highway 16/385 just 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore. The work was begun in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski at the request of Native Americans. Korczak died in 1982. His wife, Ruth, and their family continue the project working with the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation. When it is completed, the entire sculpture measures over 600 feet long and 500 feet tall! These following pictures are pictures I took during our vacation at Crazy Horse Memorial in 2002 at the Volksmarch. Follow this link to the Crazy Horse webpage for info: Crazy Horse Webpage Crazy Horse memorial at Route 16
Traffic near the Visitor's Center
We got there and are preparing for the march
A service road that leads to the mountain carving. You can even see the visitors center from here!
Path leading us to the bottom of the horse's head
The path lead us to the middle of the backside of the mountain nearing the underarm of Crazy Horse
We finally made it to the top of the arm! I was proud to scream outloud! YAH YAHEH YAH!!
The huge head is alot bigger than in what I had in mind...
The huge underarm hole is so big, it echos when I scream! (Bottom) You can even see the visitors center from here!
This was a huge experience to me. Now I realize why the people take years to just make a head sculpture! Because's its HUGE!!

When the monument is completed, they will build the North American Indian museum next to the monument. From there, the engineers will build a 200 foot wide pond surrounding the front of the monument. They will also build a soccor field and a recreation center. The people say this will attract millions of people each year. I was not able to get a picture because the picture on the Crazy Horse webpage was restricted for posting that image. But if you want to see the image, follow this link provided: Future of Crazy Horse memorial

Its me again. I want to update you on the Crazy Horse project. I checked with the crazy horse website ( http://www.crazyhorse.org/index.shtml )and I have found they have made some progress on the sculpture! Its been nearly 6 months since the last update. This time the horse's head have been roughly shaped out:
I marked the picture for you to show you the progress. The oval red area indicates the arch in which the side of the head will be carved. The green area indicates the whole horse's head.
I provided you with some recent images of the sculpture:
Those of you who like the webcam, there has been a change. Please click "behind the firewall" option. The webcam link is here: http://64.251.164.170/index.cgi Username: guest Password: guest
