GE News ---Cattle shown to align north-south
Cattle partake in some directional grazing
Have you ever noticed that herds of grazing animals all face the same way?
Images from Google Earth have confirmed that cattle tend to align their bodies in a north-south direction.
Wild deer also display this behaviour - a phenomenon that has apparently gone unnoticed by herdsmen and hunters for thousands of years.
In the Proceedings for the National Academy of Sciences, scientists say the Earth's magnetic fields may influence the behaviour of these animals.

Thanks for steering us in the right direction.
Interestingly, based upon this photo, it does not appear to matter which business end is north or south!

So I guess that this means "Daisy, Buttercup and Brown Eyes" are all now obsolete, and "Compass, GPS, Sextant and Pointer" are all the trend.
Could this be the new breed of "Cowtographer" ?

(Gotta wonder about Santa's orbit too, is it East-West, or could this be proof that after all this time it's really North-South ?)

Maybe it's those cow magnets that they have in their stomachs.

But then there's the thing about wild deer also lining up....

This is the line I like :--

Thousands of years of human history + Millions of hours spent watching herds walking up and down ( & down and up ) fields--- then along comes Google Earth to explain what's happening--Brilliant

I was on my way to work, listening to this report on the radio, and happened to be passing several herds of cattle. Yep, each animal aligned exactly N-S! Except one, which was at an angle, but he was twisted around so that his head was aligned and happily grazing N-S! I was amazed by this story! Indeed, it is weird this has gone unnoticed...but, then, maybe lots of cattlemen know about it and never thought it was important enough to talk about.
I wonder what the sheep / goat alignment is?

Interesting story, thank you Danescombe
After I read it here I read it in german too. And I asked myself, why didn't they show us some of the Google Earth images with those magnetic cows? I looked around in GE and found cows on different continents(America, Australia and Europe), but I couldn't find a single image that provides the north south theory.
Some cows in england. Whats their problem? Haven't they read this article?

location: 54°59'15.31"N, 1°37'38.53"W
some more here: 54°57'22.23"N, 1°21'36.25"W
Cows in the Netherlands. Could someone please tell them to face north/south while they are grazing?

52° 5'55.71"N, 4°21'5.17"E
I can imagine that it makes sense for animals that life in herdes and survive by escaping away from predators to face all the same way, but north-south? I don't know.
Has anyone found places in GE with cows that face north south?
Best Regards, Felippo
