Google Earth Community: George Orwell Blog

George Orwell, whose real name was Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950), wrote novels and essays about political and economic systems and social injustice. He was particularly concerned about totalitarianism, which formed the basis of his most famous novels, including Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. He also wrote documentary material, such as Down and Out in Paris and London.

His diaries are being offered online as a blog, with each new entry posted 70 years, to the day, after it was originally written. See the blog at Orwell Diaries. A nice feature is that locations discussed in the diaries are being placemarked on Google Maps.

The first entry was for the date August 9, 1938, when Orwell was in a sanatorium at Preston Hall, Aylesford, Kent due to tuberculosis. The attached placemark identifies the location.

According to the blog, posting will continue until at least 2010. A minor glitch will occur in 2010, which will not be a leap year, but is 70 years after 1940, which was a leap year. Perhaps a little historical revisionism would solve the problem.
