While many are now inactive, the existence of a mine is important for environmental safety, property liability, and other uses beyond simple geology. Similar information is available for all the Western States. Please Note: there are about 40,000 sites in California. The KMZ file is over 980KB, and expanded it is too large for Google Maps to handle. These are simple placemarks, and all are initially visible. You may find it easier to use if you turn off the visibility, zoom to where you wish to explore, then turn visibility back on. The BLM data is up to date. The locations are as they are recorded in the federal archive. But you might find the USGS posting has a format that is easier to navigate.
