I'm posting this here because I don't know where it should go.
Okay, so I reinstalled windows last week. Of course that means I need to reinstall all my programs. I hate doing this so I avoided it as long as possible. (I'm still getting reorganized a week later... grrrrr) Anyway, I burned the old "Google Earth" folder to CD, thinking that should be enough to preserve all my placemarks. (I was in a hurry) Now that I've reinstalled everything, including GE, I can't seem to find a file that contains all my old placemarks within the GE folder I burned a copy of. All I did when I made my placemarks was be sure to save them in the "my places" folder inside GE. Where is the actual file that those placemarks get saved to??? I assumed it would be the "default_myplaces.kml" file, is this correct?
I just want to get my old placemarks back. Sad part is, I once lost them all before too, when I had hundreds of great ones made by family and friends of mine. Please help me recover my last set. I'm feeling very frustrated. Thank you!

I'm afraid you may be out of luck... I don't think there's anyway to retrieve your old placemarks.
In the future, right click on your My Places folder and save it somewhere in your Google Earth folder that is on your computer. In doing so, you would have been able to retrieve your placemarks because you said you burned your Google Earth folder onto a CD.
Sorry!

Hello,
Welcome to the GE Community!
The stuff in My Places is stored in a file called myplaces.kml, which is usually found in the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth
The default_myplaces.kml file is part of the install and lives in the 'Program Files' area. Unless you save your 'Documents and Settings' data, you may have missed the boat.
To avoid losing your data again, you should look at some kind of external backup device - maybe a CD/DVD writer or even a USB key, just in case you have a problem with your hard drive or you delete or overwrite something by mistake. Have a look at this article for more about managing you GE data: http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/696307

Cheers,
Simon.

DUDE! You're the man, that's EXACTLY what I was hoping to hear! Since the reinstall did not involve a reformat, I was able to recover everything!! Thank you so much, you made my day!! <3

Yeah, thanks Simon! This should be in the FAQ or something, I just spent the last hour looking in the forum for info and here I stumble upon it by doing a general google search for "restore google earth placemarks".. I even did a search for *.KMZ and none of my placemarks came up, but they were exactly where you said they would be....
Thanks!!
