Google Earth Community: Livermore Wetlands

Vernal pools are wetlands that come to life in the winter and evaporate in concentric rings of rare wildflowers during the hot, dry summer months. Of the 22 million acres of vernal pools once found in California and Oregon, 75 percent have been lost to agriculture, grazing and invasion by non-native species, and development. Vernal pools are habitat for more than 30 species of plants and animals that live in seasonal wetlands.
The 2004 593-page "Draft Recovery Plan for Vernal Pool Ecosystems" is aimed at protecting remaining vernal pools.
One of the vernal pool areas identified in the recovery plan lies just outside the north Livermore, California, city limits; a 1,400-acre property just west of Springtown. These wetlands were once extensive in the Livermore Valley.
Developers proposed setting aside more than two-thirds of the land it wants to develop for open space preservation and public facilities.
