Here is a very well guarded nuclear sub base up the Cooper River, north of Charleston SC. I found these subs up close during a Waverunner trip down the Cooper. I rode a bit too close to them, and was turned away by gunboats in the river, on guard 24/7. They are teeny fron this perspective, but when you are in the river with them... they are huge!!!! They are painted black, and are at the dock. There are two of them. You will also see the gunboats in the river, and the HUGE dockside hangar, that they are housed in at times. Hope you like this... and yes.. it must be a deep river!!!

Nice find, Beetlejuice! Looks like Polaris Missle Command in its final stages at Goose Creek Naval Weapons Center.

An UPDATE - After doing LOTS of research, I've uncovered more information about these subs. They are moored permanently as training ships. They are part of the Nuclear Propulsion Training Unit at the Goose Creek, SC Naval Weapons Station. The subs are... SSBN-626 Daniel Webster and SSBN-635 Sam Rayburn. Both are Lafayette class nuclear subs. They are retired, but serving our country as training ships.

Are you sure they are permenantly moored? When I was out on the river in a friends boat, we came close to the base, then turned back, and as we were leaving, the fish-detecting sonar all of a sudden turned black, with some huge object. We laughed it off as a submarine, and forgot about it until now. But, perhaps it really was a sub, after reading this post, I think so.

Even though it is a deep river, I seriously doubt the subs traverse it submerged. Looks like you let the big one get away!

There's a LOT of Submarines in Washington State, for those interested. Have a look at Bangor Naval Submarine Base and Bremerton Naval Base. You can also clearly see the nuclear weapons storage facility and one SSBN in drydock on the delta pier. There's about 15 subs at Bremerton, several of which are moored outboard of each other.
I was stationed on USS Chicago, SSN 721 in San Diego, and while I was there, there were subs everywhere! I couldn't find any in the imagery, however - very odd. I know most of them moved to Hawaii (PH) after I got out...

This famous submarine shouldn't be too hard to find or spot. Its just to the very right and east of the Chicago's Science Museum roof 'CROSS'... a lightly bluish grey vertical object: THE U-505 Check out also the kool U-505 interactive website:

You can also clearly see the U505 from this perspective:

Here are some placemarks in New London, Connecticut. One shows the sub base just north of the city on the Thames River, another shows the General Dynamics submarine plant where they've built some of the largest US subs (though none are visible), and lastly, one that shows the Coast Guard's three masted barque Eagle.

Great first post, Keyman. You missed the USS Nautilus . Your finds are terrific, but with over 10000 folks on the board, there's always the chance that others have already made the post. So, to be sure, try clicking the "keyhole" tab and scroll down to "Keyhole community bbs" and click the check box. This will light up areas already posted.
