Whale shark tracking

UPDATE: 27.11.2005

Schroeders farewell

Since a couple of days, the sattelite tag stopped transmitting. At first we only received the same temperature data, then the transmission stopped totally. Looks like Schroeder finally got rid of the tag or there is a malfunction within the system.

After over three month of a interesting "live" travel visible trough Google Earth it's now time to say good bye to our whale shark schroeder.
If everythings goes right we will be able to have another whale shark in GE around Jan.2006 - this time it will be tagged in Djibouti (Southern Africa)!
Of course we will report about this as soon as we have the first data coming trough.

Anyway, the projects website will still be updated with information about new AND processed old data. So keep checking it out or add the RSS Feed!

Regards,
André

Update: 15.Nov.2005

After more than two month of tracking the Whale shark Schroeder, we are very happy that the tag is still transmitting very acurate position data.
If everything goes right we will have another whale shark tracked on our platform, tagged by a french group of whale shark researchers. As soon as we have results we will post them here first...

We recently added a overlay picture for the wave heights and directions - very interesting to see that the shark is moving with the current/waves !!!
If Schroeder continues his move with the same daily speed average he will be in Indonesia (Sumatra) in about 2 weeks from now on.

During the last days we also created a true network link for GE (15min refresh intervall) - you can download it here

(Schroeder traveled alreday more than 5000 KM / 3000 Miles)

Original Article

I would like to introduce an interesting project... it shows the use of googleEarth in the educational / research sector...

In August this Year a group of young students from the German Europen School Singapore tagged a whale shark with an sattelite-tag, where the data now being published in the web trough a google earth KML-file. This 7 meter long male Shark, named "Schroeder" now is on it's way from the Seychelles to - maybe - Somalia (Afrika). During the last few weeks you could see a move of over 700 KM ....

Ok, not yet a layer but still dynamic(updated every 12 hrs by a php script) ....

You can download the automatic updating file here

Also see the project website - we would be happy if you could give us some hints how to improve the usage in this project.

Regards,
André

This is an excellent example of using Google Earth and GPS technology. As a sailor, I have a lot of respect for the sea and marine science. I've written an article about this at the Google Earth Blog.

I hope that other marine scientists who are tracking (or have tracked) sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles, etc. will think to use Google Earth to visualize their data and share it with the world.

This is amazing. I like how there are spikes in his path. I'll keep my eye on this watch. Thank you.

Thank you very much for the blog article you've created!
At the moment we are trying to boost google Earth in (marine) research projects - I think there will be more of those projects in the next time.

Great post!!! This is what Google Earth is great for so it's good to see people using the potential!

Gavin.

We really would like to enrich the use of Goggle Earth for our project – therefore we have temperature and depth profiles from the Satellite tag. Right now I am still working on the PHP routines for the auto-update-script to handle the data and decompile it, but here my knowledge ends!

What is the best way to visualize this two data? One big problem is, that I do not get position data during the shark is diving… means that there is no 1:1 relation between diving data (which are saved in a cache inside the tag during diving) and a specific position. Same goes for the temperature profiles during the dive – but it’s likely that the tag will get the temperature just moments before the transmission.

Does anybody have a good idea or maybe an example?!

André

View in Google Earth (438 downloads)

If you have other data associated with the placemark, you can add it to the description (descriptions use basic HTML, so you can do some formatting). Or, you could add a link in the description to a web page on your web site which documents the data.

I think it would be better to put the information in the description of the placemarks. You could even put images of a graph, if that would help, into a description.

Attached is a very crude example I've made up of your last placemark.

Is this what you were talking about? Or did I misunderstand your question?

First of all sorry for the late answer!

Yes, in fact tis is exactly what I was looking for - a simple way to display some additional data with GE! Tank you very much.

I will add a gd-libary function to my kml-update script (PHP) which will automaticly render some nice bargraphs and add them into the description. Maybe by the end of next week you will see the new track.
