Persian Gulf -True name, false name?
      #136795 - 09/29/05 03:24 PM

hello dear members,
(i am new here, sorry if there is a problem with the place i am posting this thread)

the thing that i am going to write here may not be a very important issue for any of u, but its important for me and my compatriots

its about changing the name of "Persian Gulf " to "Gulf" and "Arabian Gulf"
i think political issues shouldnt be interfered in geographical issues

"Persian gulf " is located in middle east, in south of Iran, its been known as "Persian Gulf " for thousands of years,
recently some organizations have tried to show its name as "Gulf " or even "Arabian Gulf"

well, i was playing with google earth, that i found out , when i look at " Persian Gulf " from above, it shows the correct name "Persian Gulf"
but when i zoom in it changes the name to "Gulf "
and when i told about this to some of my friends, they said, it changes the name to "Arabian Gulf "

i didnt know where to tell this matter, so i found here as the only place for saying my objection
i will appreciate u to tell me wat to do for reporting this big mistake to the sponsors

and here r 2 images by google earth showing persian gulf with its true and false names

I was stationed in Saudi Arabia for a few years, all the arabic people I knew called it the Arabian Gulf. Persia doesn't exist any more as a political entity. Calling it just the Gulf doesn't differentiate it from all the other Gulfs. It's like a lot of places, China sea to the Japanese, even dear ol' Rutland and Wessex- just a distant memory now.

I don't wish to argue about any place names.. but here in New Zealand some places are being renamed to reflect the Maori Culture we have.. Example.. Mount Cook has always been Mount Cook but it now has a double Name.. Mount Cook / Aoraki or Aoraki Mount Cook..
http://www.mount-cook.com/main/NationalPark/

Mount Egmont the same.. Mount Egmont / Taranaki http://www.windwand.co.nz/ourmountain.htm

There are many other place being done in the same way.

So perhaps the powers that be could do something like that for those "sensitive" areas

Aryobarzan,
One of the first things I checked when I installed Google earth, was Persian gulf. I was glad to see Google earth uses the correct name.
Now you pointed that name changes to "the gulf" when you zoom in.
But I didn't find the misnomer " Arabian gulf" in GE.
In the international documents and reports we frequently see the "Gulf" but the Arabian gulf is not used internationally and maybe used in some of the Arab countries.

Sirous

well, in my google earth it doesnt show "Arabian gulf" either, but its wat one of my friends said about his google earth, i am waiting for him to send me a screenshot
and about using the term "gulf " , till before revolution of iran, no one dared to use even the term "Gulf " instead of "Persian Gulf " , so even using Gulf instead Persian Gulf is ridiculous

Sorry, but I believe that image may be photoshopped. I have NOT been able to reproduce YOUR results. Here's MY screencap from the same position and altitude (if you TRULY see that, placemark at the exact point and post it up):

Just an FYI. If someone asks where I was aboard ship in 1979 or 1991, I tell them The Gulf. They instantly know where I was talking about.

From the surface (37ft altitude) to 334.40 miles, the name is The Gulf. At 334.4 miles up, BOTH names are visible. From 334.4 to 1340 miles altitude, the name is Persian Gulf. Above that, the name layer for that area of water is not visible. At no time in the zoom from 39,205.98 miles out to the surface did it change names to anything other than the two shown - The Gulf and Persian Gulf.

I do, however, see one blatant error - The Gulf of Bahrain is misspelled.

Today I noticed "The Gulf" has turned to be "Persian Gulf".
If this was a correction made by GE staff, hereby I appreciate their understanding.
