A Golden Eagle cam from Scotland from a former post. It's not a live cam, but has some pretty good footage.

Re: Live peregrine falcon cam - four eggs [Re: neon_]

A fourth egg arrived on March 10

According to the Nest Diary it was a live, early afternoon webcast delivery.

The downtown peregrine pair have been dubbed George & Gracie.

update: peregrine falcon cam on the 33rd floor [Re: neon_]
      #22044 - 03/25/05 12:14 PM

George & Gracie are in full time incubation mode. Below is a rare glimpse of the 4 eggs unattended for a moment that I snapped today. Hatching is estimated to start around April 8-9.

Here's a nice informative bit about what's going on now, from the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research rep who is great with Q&A on the falcons' Yahoo message board:

Quote:

HATCHING – What's really going on under Gracie? During incubation, the developing embryos get their oxygen by diffusion of air through tiny pores in the eggshell into blood vessels that line a membrane on the inside of the shell. As the embryo grows, using up the nutrients of the egg, the aircell in the blunt end of the egg (the little pocket of air you can see between two membranes when you crack a chicken egg for an omelette) expands to fill about a quarter of the space inside the egg.

About two days before hatching, the embryo will poke its beak into this aircell and begin to breath using its lungs. Soon it will deplete the oxygen there, and break a tiny opening in the eggshell, an event called "pipping". At this point, the chick is able to vocalize, alerting the adults that it's nearing hatching. Hatching itself doesn't take place for about two more days, while the chick prepares to make the transition from egg to hatchling. The hatching process itself takes about an hour.

And here is a falcon box in Richmond, VA, where the falcons are nesting for the 3d year in a row.

I'll placemark this JUST AS SOON AS RICHMOND IS PUT IN HI-RES!!! (dammit!)

Edit: I placemarked it anyway. The view is approximately that in Camera #2.

(edit: Oh yeah, if the pictures seem a little dark, it's because it's NIGHTTIME! Wait until morning and try again.)

Two chicks have hatched
One overnight April 11/12 and one early in the morning on April 12.

edit: A third hatchling emerged April 12 in the afternoon! 3 down, 1 to go (maybe)

Falcon Cam

PG&E continues to host the falcons and foot the bill for their website and forum.

===============================

Re-edit: oops, I forgot to post the happy news that San Francisco egg #4 hatched successfully, way back on April 13!

Here is how they look at two weeks - still eating - they are often unattended during the day for short periods now:

Thanks to Jdbo and the McGuire Woods/Richmond falcons for reminding me I'd neglected to update the latest happy event at PG&E

Quote:

June 6, 2005 - Richmond's youngest predators are on the loose. Under the watchful eyes of their parents, two peregrine falcon chicks were released this morning from their cage atop the First National Bank Building at 823 E. Main St.

To prevent them from falling or diving off the skyscraper before they were fully ready to fly, the 40-day-old chicks had been caged by a team from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The best place to view the falcons is from the plaza in front of the Dominion building at Eighth and Cary streets. You can see a two-by-four jutting from the BB&T sign on the south side of the First National Bank Building -- that is the top of the cage. The two adult falcons frequently roost on the two "S" letters on the western face of the Suntrust building to the east.

A webcam of the nest site is available at www.mcguirewoods.com/falcons

The other two chicks, a male and a female, were relocated to Hawksbill Mountain, placemarked (3d on) in the Shenandoah National Park, where peregrine chicks from around Virginia are collected and hacked in what should be their "natural" environment.

I wish them all well!
