Submarines at Bremerton aren't part of the Pacific Fleet, they're decommissioned and awaiting being cut up as part of the submarine recycling program.

Good observation, Lt. Harris! These subs will be "recycled" for the good of the Service!

I was in the Navy in groton. We had the best food in the military there. Had alot of fun in that town. Its not a bad place. I used to hear a rumor about some newbie running a submarine aground right under the thames bridge just south of the base. Cost billions. anyways...........

BTW the coast guard academy is right across the river, we would go eat there when we were on that side of town and it was time to eat.

I did not know anything about the history of the USS Saipan (CVL 48) when I flew out from Barin Field (Go to Foley Alabama, East of the main intersection on 98 and the south on Barin Field Road--you can still see the runways) to the carrier to make my six qualification landings flying an SNJ.
Much more recently I have learned that the Saipan had been the first carrier to qualify a jet squadron (VF-17A flying the Phantom FH-1). Many years after I made my carrier qualification landings the Saipan was converted to a primary landing area communications ship and renamed Arlington (AGMR-2). She was the Manned Spacecraft Recovery ship that made recovery for Appollo 8, Appollo 10 and Appollo 11. Between 10 and 11 she provided communications support for the Nixon-Thieu conference. The president was on board for a one night visit for the Appollo 11 recovery.
Now there is an entirely different ship named USS Saipan (an amphibious assault ship designated LHA-2). After the original ship was decommissioned she was positioned at San Diego. I don't know if she is still there. Has anyone seen her at San Diego?
