If this had been previously placemarked, that placemark has vanished. Here at the Philly Reserve is the carrier America., decommisioned in 1996.
The Navy has big plans for the America, that cause the superstitious much anxiety. (bad luck to scuttle a ship named for your Country!) Read here:

Image update has removed "America" from this placemark!

I was stationed on the USS George Washington (CVN-73) *Yellowshirt* "FLY-2" ABH'3. Pier 11, Nav. Sta. Norfolk. Its nice to see so many other people who take and interest in these powerful boats. Heres a small bit of trivia for ya.......How long can a Nimitz Class Carrier stay at 30+ knots WITHOUT having to refuel its reactors?

Good question, Razberry: I was just a Navy doctor, down in sick bay, but I would say these big guys, when finally improved, may, one day, go close to 1,000,000 miles without a pit-stop. Info!
...about 40 Circumnavigations of the Keyhole Globe!
And Raz: You must have seen Stiuskr's Post where he refers to your old home CVN73!

Good guess! The answer was given to me by our commanding officer of the G.W. He said that they could remain at 30+ knots nonstop for 14 YEARS before having to refuel thier reactors. Talk about insane huh? *Kinda humbling if you ask me*

Ah, an old favorite category, neatly ordered!
Here's the Carrier John F. Kennedy at its homeport of Mayport, FL. The Navy wants to scrap her. Florida doesn't want that. Virginia doesn't want that either!

Hard to make out, but that's the USS Yorktown sitting in Charleston Bay.
Not quite so hard to make out anymore..

This was my first ship back in 1973. She was being used as a training carrier out of Pennsacola, FL. She has a very interesting past. Now she's a floating museum. I believe she was the last active carrier with a wooden flight deck.

Carrier USS America intentionally sunk
Associated Press May 20, 2005
NEWPORT NEWS - The retired aircraft carrier USS America is resting on the Atlantic's bottom, sunk by the Navy through a series of explosions.
The 84,000-ton, 1,048-foot warship served the Navy for 32 years.
Pat Dolan, a spokeswoman for Naval Sea Systems Command, told the Daily Press of Newport News the America was sunk May 14 through a series of explosions that flooded the ship, sending it to the bottom of the ocean more than 6,000 feet below. She said the ship rests 58 miles out to sea.
Dolan did not immediately return a telephone message left Friday by The Associated Press.
The Navy did not announce the sinking until days after it occurred.
No warship this size or larger had ever been sunk, and plans to sink the America had been an emotional proposal for many veterans.
"Not a day goes by that I don't think about it," said Lee McNulty, president of the USS America Foundation, which wanted to turn the ship into a museum. "Of all the carriers, that one should have been saved, just for the name America."
Since its decommissioning in 1996, the America has been moored with dozens of other inactive warships at a Navy yard in Philadelphia.
The America launched warplanes during the Vietnam War, the 1986 conflict with Libya, the first Gulf War, and over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the mid-1990s.
Before it sank, the America served as a target for a series of explosions over 25 days.

The carrier to the far right is cvn-73 (uss. george washington). Unable to make out the number on the other large carrier.. The other two are baby flat tops used my the Marine Expedtionary Forces.. Looks to that they are in for repairs... all of them.. I spent a year on the carrier Kitty Hawk of the coast of VIetnam in the late 60's.. If you happen to see a carrier with the numbe 63 painted on front of the ship's flight deck, let me know..

Here is the US Naval Base at Rota, Spain., which may soon be Headquarters US Sixth Fleet , which is supporting operations at the eastern end of the mediterranean in the middle east. The placemark shows few elements of the sixth fleet in port.
The post inspired by Manute's earlier post on Naval Air facilities there.
