... US Navy warships at this US Navy facility ... ... see attached yet another placemark of this location!
"Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, the high desert home of the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, is where the Navy and Marine Corps have developed or tested nearly every significant airborne weapon system in the past five decades. China Lake is located 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles on the western edge of California's Mojave Desert. China Lake supports the primary research and development, test and evaluation work for air warfare and missile weapons systems. Missiles such as Sidewinder, Shrike and Walleye are just a few of the many products at China Lake which have been developed for the fleet. China Lake is home to approximately 4,400 civilian employees and about 1,000 military personnel. The Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS), China Lake, encompases 1.1 million acres of land in California's upper Mojave Desert, accounting for approximately one-third of the Navy's total land holdings. The land, ranging in altitude from 2,100 to 8,900 feet, varies from flat dry lake beds to rugged piņon pine covered mountains."

Just got on the BBS. First time, first thread I have looked at, and first post im gonna make. Heck of a thread it was. I guess some of yall are looking at the Pro version cause I cant see some of the marks in high res. Why some of the ships gone from the marks? New to this so bear with me for a few. I didnt see the Arizona in the thread but someone has marked it already. but here it is anyway.
Hope the other threads are as good as this one.

Welcome to the BBS, yaDad.
First, your question about why placemarks don't have ships under them. The placemarks in this thread date back several years, and the image database that Google Earth uses has been updated with newer imagery many times since they were first posted. This means that movable objects that were once visible may now have moved and aren't visible anymore.
As to your comments about the USS Arizona, if you look in the lower left corner of Google Earth, you'll find the "Layers" menu. The second item on the list is the "Keyhole Community BBS", which contains placemarks for many of the posts made to the BBS in the past. If you turn this on, you'll find that the USS Arizona is a popular spot.

yaDad :
Here is a quote from yesterday in a Linux Trade Journal :
Quote:
Google Earth, you may recall, is a re-branding of Keyhole, Inc.'s Earthviewer product. It relies primarily on commercial satellite images from one to two years ago. Keyhole was founded in 2001, released its first product in 2003, and was purchased by Google in October 2004. The Earthviewer 3D was redubbed Google Earth in May and released at three price points: free (basic), $20 per year ("Plus") and $400 per year ("Pro").
Google Earth can use either OpenGL or DirectX as its 3D toolkit, and the System Requirements page has long touted the claim that a Mac OS X-native version of the application is being worked on. Furthermore, the Google Earth Fusion component of the enterprise corporate package already runs on Linux.
GE , though appearing rather new, really is not, so some of the earlier posts on the bbs are from the "Keyhole-Earthviewer" days!!
BTW: WELCOME to GE and our bbs, and CONGRATS on your first post!!

This is the former USS Inchon (LPH-12). It is/was an amphibious assault ship. I did a six month cruise on her in 1987 to the Med.

In case it hasn't been located yet, this is the USS Des Moines, a heavy cruiser. Sister to the USS Salem in Quincy Mass and the USS Little Rock in Buffalo, NY.

If you ever get a chance to visit EAGLE, see if you can peek under the flag draped near the wheel - you might the builder's plate with the swastika and the vessel's original name, HORST VESSEL.
