I have been looking at the Ghost fleet in Bremerton WA. I remember many years ago when I was in the yards on the USS Canopus AS 34. Now she's in a ghost fleet on the east coast. More importantly the Missouri was in all most the same spot as "Many Carriers" are today. When I was in Bahrain during the Gulf War she was active again and I bought a ball cap in her ships store! The New Jersey was along side us, just back from 'nam.

The one with its nose pointing out was my old ship. CVN 73, the USS George Washington. You can make out the faint outline of the 73 up forward.

I hunted for any post for this and can't find one. It's not listed in the layers. I'm not entirely certain of the ID of the ship. Given that most of them were sold for scrap back in the very early 1990's, the field is certainly limited.

My first guess was that she was DD-942 USS Bigelow which was sunk in 2003 as part of a SINKEX. earthgoogler pointed out several aspects such as the excellent condition of the ship that it is very likely actually the USS Edson being moved from the Intrepid Museum to Philadelphia. The placemark reflects this.

It is more likely DD-946 USS Edson. After she was removed from the Intrepid Air Sea Space Museum and returned to the Navy, she was moored at the former New York Naval Yard for a short time before being moved to Philadelphia. I read this somewhere when I researched the ships in Philadelphia (the missing Edson greatly helped to date the GE image there).
Additionally, this ship seems to be in good condition, Bigelow looks much worse in this picture (taken in August 2002): http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/0594207.jpg

Btw, I think it is strange what Google did to New York's harbor: all those "ghost ships" that result from different images put together. It looks like they wanted to include as much interesting ships as possible, the worst example being the Queen Mary 2 just north of Intrepid.

I'd thought it might be the Edson at first, but this ship didn't look to be in quite as good of a condition as the Edson. I could easily chalk that up to the lighting, though. I couldn't see the barrels in the turrets for example. It IS in remarkably good shape, yeah. I think I'll update the placemark when I get home to say it's probably the Edson. Silly me for talking myself out of it.

As for the ghosting, if you notice there has been quite a lot of updating of the New York imagery over time. The area from Manhattan to JFK has been updated with new aerial photography. I guess they leave the harbor imagery at lower resolution because the airplanes don't tend to photograph much of the water. As you say, I'm sure they try and pick interesting ships at dock. I think the utter WORST ghost problems are the docks in Greece near Athens. Those are horrible. They need to fix their layer blending there and just pick one layer to be totally opaque. (if they can)

Thanks for the comment!

I took a closer look at some details of the ship: the gun barrels on the rear turrets are barely visible but their shadows are there. Also visible is the motor launch next to the rear funnel. The funnel tops are in a fresh looking black. The Bigelow in the Navsource pictures has her barrels cut, the motor launch is missing and the funnels are grey.

As for Athens, have you noticed the second Fletcher class destroyer moored there? Velos (ex-DD-581 Charette) is preserved as a museum next to Georgios Averoff, but there is a second one moored near the fleet base. The last Fletcher in Greece (apart from Velos) was Aspis (ex-DD-582 Conner) which was sold for scrap in 1997. Could the imagery be that old?

I guess the only answer I can give is .. I suppose it must be that old. I know for a while that some of the aerial photography in Tokyo was at least 6 years old because a building built in 2000 wasn't there, and nothing was even remotely started. (including clearing the site of other buildings) I'd not be surprised if that imagery was from 1997, though there's no way I could tell. Plus, they've gone through updating with less pretty but much more up-to-date imagery in Tokyo.

I believe you'll find that what you're looking at is the hull of the USS Long Beach, CGN-9, a nuclear powered cruiser. She's been stripped of most everything topside, and is nothing but a hull in the water.

To the left of her, although not seriously visibile in this picture is the USS Triton, the only US Submarine with twin nuclear reactors. Triton was commanded by Ed Beach, Capt. USN (Ret) who took the Triton around the world underwater, the first such vessel to circumnavigate the globe entirely underwater.

I also believe the USS Bainbridge, CGN-25 is in that group, just outboard of the Long Beach.

Finally, further to the left is the dry dock, where ships up to aircraft carriers are berthed for repair.

Jumble, Just FYI, I know this is an Old Post, Re: 20 Subs at Bremerton. this part of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard is reserved for all boats that are in storage, awaiting their turn in the decom, and teardown Docks.
As part of the Submarine recycling program, each one of these Boats has been decommissioned. defueled, in the case of 2 remaining Old 640 Class FBM's the Missile Compartments were cut out of the hulls, they were then defueled, and welded back together, to await scrapping.
Most of the current inventory of Boats at PSNS, are decommed 688 boats, One of the last Subs I served on is also here awaiting scrapping Process, the USS Parche SSN-683. which was a 637 class SSN...with some serious modifications. So far the SRP program has decommisioned and scrapped around 120 US Submarines, going back to the original Boats. the only Nuclear boat to have survived this process is of course Nautilus SSN-571 in Groton. All 594 class, 589 class, 637 Class, 598,608,616,627, and 640 class Boomers are gone or almost goen, Kamehameha SSBN-642 is last one in yard waiting scrapping. so far I believe about 18, 688 class Boats have been or are in process of being scrapped. Hope this helps to clarify what is being seen here...

Regards,

Boomervet
