Earthgoogler, you mention three carriers in China. I have read reports that the Kiev was purchased and was to be used as a theme park in Tianjin in a similar fashion to the Minsk. I cannot however see it anywhere in a Chinese port. Is it really in China?
You also mention three true carriers in Italy. I can see the Conti di Cavour and the Guiseppe Garibaldi but no other. I don't think there is a listing of another carrier currently in operation.
I do not class the San Giorgio class assault ship as a carrier as it is not a flat top i.e. you cannot fly a plane off it.. Don't say you can fly Harriers off it as you can even fly those from tankers (ho ho).
How do you tell that the Wasp class carrier parked next to the Wasp is in fact the Iwo Jima. The deck number is not visible. I know there is a label in the google earth community but where does the information come from originally?
Yes I did get Indonesia mixed up with Thailand, sorry.
Happy sailing Suzie

There was this thread recently about the carriers in China.
You're right with the Italian carriers, there are just two. Conti di Cavour is visible twice, the complete ship under construction in La Spezia and a large section of the ship under construction in Riva Trigoso.
If you do not class the San Giorgio class as a flattop because it can not operate aircraft, you should not class the Japanese Osumi class as flattops either. Those ships may look like the much larger US amphibious carriers, but they are only capable of operating two helicopters from their rear deck. The forward deck is not even suitable for helicopter operations and is only used to store vehicles. These ships also do not have any helicopter / aircraft hangar. They only have a hangar deck for vehicles that is not suitable for helicopters. The French ship Mistral can not operate aircraft either (it can probably launch them but has no hangar for them)
The third Wasp class ship in Norfolk must be either Iwo Jima or Kearsage. I think Kearsage was underway at the time the image was taken.

I believe that the middle carrier at Bremerton, is in fact, the USS Constellation (CV-64) and not USS Midway (CV-41).
This address: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Midway_(CV-41)#A_final_cruise_and_then_on_to_life_as_a_museum
and others point to Midway as being in San Diego and continued life as a museum ship. USS Midway is an older class carrier of some 55-65,000 tons displacement, and has (had) only two steam catapults.
The center carrier (and the outer two as well) has four catapults, and her deck-edge elevators are arranged two starboard and forward of her island (control tower and bridge structure) and one aft starboard and port sides. This means she is of the Kittyhawk class.
This site: http://www.ussconstellation.org/
has the Connie (CV-64) in the Bremerton mothball fleet, and the bow number on google earth sure could be 64 to my eyes.
Either way, none of the carriers tied up at roughly N 47-33 by W 122-39 are Midway class vessels. The two outer ships appear to be Forrestal-class with their island structure being forward of two starboard-aft elevators, and one portside elevator forward of the waist (portside) catapults. This arrangement of elevators wasn't used on carriers after the Forrestal-class.
Hope this helps.

You are very wrong. It is the USS Constellation CV-64. How do i know this you may ask. Other than that 64 is clearly visible on the deck, I also served on this ship for many, many, many days at sea in the early 90's. Also, I have seen it at Bremerton and you can go to the Navy's website and read about it. It is currently being stripped and will be sunk off the coast of Washington to make a reef. I can not wait to see that piece of crap sink to the bottom of the ocean... Every day at sea was like an eternity in hell. Diesel carriers suck, I smelled like diesel fuel for months after I left. I don't know how, but someone should change the note in Google Earth. -Matt

Welcome to this board HendersonPhoto! This thread is one of the oldest threads on this board. Please take a look at the date of Jumble's post, it is from four years ago. The imagery of Bremerton was changed several times since he posted. What he said was probably right back in 2003, but with the recent imagery there are different ships visible there. Please turn on the 'Google Earth Community' layer in the 'Layers' window. You'll see that the ships at Bremerton have been identified and posted in different threads on this board. I think this thread is somewhat problematic. It is one of those with the most replies and thus featured on the entrance page, but most of it's content is outdated.

new to this community, sorry if it has been mentioned already. the carrier in the middle @ Bremerton appears to be number 64, the USS Constellation. Fairly confident in that, I have numerous aerial photos of the boat and the comparison of angles between my reference material seems to back that up.
