I may not be certain of this, but this ship appears to be either the USS Alaska CB1 or the USS Guam CB2. The size of the main turrets look to be 12 inch and the only two cruisers that had that size main turret were those I listed above. The Boston and Canberra were once tied up here were eventually converted to Guided missile cruisers, which replaced the number 3 main turret (aft). The missile launchers replaced that turret.

It's not the battleship NJ as posted. this is a WWII Cruiser. For comparrison take a look at the Missouri in Pearl Harbor, much larger and more defined curved sides. I pass this often, used to know it's name but I forgot.

Kennedy is already retired and is headed for decomissioning. Its catapults were already dismantled when she made her last port call to Boston in the spring.

I drove past it for a couple of years every day going to work... I kind of remember the side numbers being those of a state in the middle of the atlantic coast, but I could be mis-remembering... are you sure about that midwestern state?

Hi Guys, I don't know if you solved the riddle yet about this ship but she isn't a battle ship she's a cruiser by the name of USS Des Moines. Hope this finally puts her to rest. Collin1955

This thread has been placed in the "Best of..." layer in the "Geographic Web" Some berthing locations are far from final, or are no longer valid (e.g., "midway" in Bremerton).
I suggest this thread be placed in a normal Community layer and the validity of each placemark be reverified.
Failing that, the thread should be archived, moved to a non-scanned forum, or deleted.

The ship in the photograph is likely the USS Des Moines (CA 134) or USS Salem (CA 139) (depending upon the date of the photograph), one of the last all-gun heavy cruisers. That it is a cruiser, rather than battleship, can be seen by the arrangement of the 5"/38 gun mounts. Cruisers had gun mounts just aft of number 2 turret and forward of number 3 turret. USS Salem is now a museum in Quincy, Massachusetts. The only other all-gun heavy cruiser is the USS Newport News (CA 148). After an explosion in number 2 turret, the center gun was removed and the turret locked in place. These three ships were the last all-gun heavy cruisers built.
