You mean in San Diego? Yes, the imagery there, actually just the small part of the harbour where the Midway is, is too old, it was taken before the ship arrived in San Diego. CV-41 Midway can be seen in the San Francisco Bay area near Alameda where she was moored for a short time between the removal from the Bremerton reserve fleet and the arrival in San Diego. Everything is OK with your mind, don't worry!

Did the change the Imagery? I could have sworn that at one time the imagery did show the Midway at the pier in SD, but now its back in Oakland. Why do they jump backwards on the imaging?

Can't be an Iowa class BB. Too small and note the smaller turret behind the bigger second turret. I believe this may be a Baltimore Class Heavy Cruiser from WWII. Probably the Oregon City maybe? If it was Iowa class there would be tomahawk launchers behind second stack.

I am BRAND new at this so forgive me if I'm out of line. I'm trying to respond to a question which I just found on Google Earth, about a ship at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. If I'm finding references correctly, the question had been posted in 2004 so I may be off base. But, then, why is it still showing up in 2008? Anyway, Jdbo asked "What is this Behemoth?" I'm not absolutely positive but I'll bet it's a LST (Landing Ship, Tank). The odd structure at the narrow end (the bow) is the framework to "run out" the ramp, the patterned feature on the forecastle. As to which ship, I have no clue. But I'm going to check the Naval Vessel Registry for that class and see if any are in mothballs at Philidadelphia. Bob, aka Snoopy1949. BTW if Jbdo sees this, I'm a cartographer, too. Small world.

My second post, still on the "Behemoth" at the Philly Navy Yard. The Naval Vessel Registry says the BOULDER (LST-1190) is "Inactive, out of commission, in reserve" at Philidelphia. No other ship in the current (Mar 2008) Google Earth imagery matches that description. A caution: the NVR page has not been updated since 2001. I'm not a betting man but I'll bet your behemoth is the BOULDER. Bob

Greetings, all,
I'm new to the forum, and this happened to be the first thread that caught my attention sufficiently to read in its entirety. Parts of it brought tears to my eyes, especially reading about the Nautilus, Long Beach, and Midway (those posts predating my tear-jerking visit to the Midway museum in San Diego and my first glimpse of the Ronald Reagan, alone on Carrier Row at North Island).
In 1989, I was an 18-year-old A-7E plane captain in VA (now VFA) -22, aboard the Enterprise during workups. At one point, I had the amazing opportunity to watch the Long Beach and the Nautilus sailing alongside us just over the horizon from western Mexico. Three nuclear revolutions sailing together. Now two of them are history, along with nearly every aircraft in our air wing.
When I first saw the A-7E, I couldn't imagine coming to love it, and the F/A-18 is certainly more versatile (to the sadness of those who love the A-7, A-6, and F-14), but sometimes I still have dreams of launching a flight of A-7Es, each with a pair of F/A-18s packed with RDX mounted on its pylons, and dropping those puppies on our adversary-of-the-day. I loved being in an ATTACK squadron, and I loved flight ops at night, but I don't think the flight deck could be quite as exciting without the fear of being sucked into an intake the size of a VW bug.
I guess everyone goes through that loss and sadness (except the B-52 guys), and I'm just waiting for McDonnell-Douglas to develop a Hornet variant to replace the E-2C.
Such is progress, I guess, but I'd still love to see a warship try to outrun the Enterprise.

Welcome linuxgeek, what an interesting post!
Unfortunately the site you used apparently doesn't allow hotlinking. Here is your picture:

You can set up a free account at ImageShack or photobucket if you need somewhere to store images.

Hi Snoopy1949!
You are correct, the ship visible at that placemark is indeed LST-1190 USS Boulder. There was an imagery update just some weeks ago. Before that there was the cruiser CA-134 USS Des Moines visible at the same spot. You'll also notice that there are other placemarks at the Navy Yard that do not match the ships at the moment. That is because it takes some time before Google puts new or updated placemarks from this forum into GoogleEarth. To get the correct placemarks for the Philly Navy Yard you might want to look at my post here.
