So far I have accumulated 41 placemarks covering 45 aircraft, not all visible by any means. One or two of these are duplicates but contain fuller information, and I wanted all of them in one place. What's the protocol for publishing something of this kind? (Publish and be damned....) [Edit 10-Feb-06: attached updated file to this root post]; more found!
Slight edit to correct the placemark for XS417 now that Newark is in hi-res Slight edit to correct the placemark for XN370, now that the Gatow museum has moved their aircraft around Slight edit to correct the placemark for XR724 now that Binbrook is in hi-res Requires correction of the Tangmere aircraft.
[Edit 27-Jun-07: used hi-res to locate some more accurately, fixed some broken links]
Edit 1 Feb 2008 - slight edit to correct the placemark for ZF581, now that Rochester is in hi-res. Edit 24 Feb 2008 - to correct placemark for ZF579 at Gatwick - change of imagery.

HI Nick, - welcome to GE
There are a few things to bear in mind when you're publishing a collection.
For each aircraft:
1. A placemark in GE will be generated by the placemark contained in your collection 2. A second placemark will be generated when this first placemark eventually goes into the GE Community Layers 3. Any placemarks already placed by the people who originally discovered the aircraft (quite a few) will also appear. 4. These placemarks will also generate placemarks in the Layer
I can assist you in this respect if you PM me.
The next thing is to keep your collection together. The best way of doing that is to create a new folder in "My Places" in GE and put all of your placemarks into it. Save it to your hard drive and post it exactly as you would a single placemark. This cuts down on the number of posts you'll need, it keeps your work together, and it's very easy to maintain and update - plus it's easier for your "customers" to find.
By and large a collection is a good thing, because people can find all related placemarks in one place, thus reducing the possibility of their entering subsequent duplicate placemarks.
There is no real need to do all the work and then publish the collection in one go - you can start with your folder containing just one placemark, then add to it as time and information permit.
Add interest to your collection by learning how to add images and weblinks to both your post and the placemarks themselves.
As an ex-Lightning guy myself, it's something I had been considering doing but hadn't got around to it. I'll be happy to assist you in any way I can.
Cheers
Frank

Some of the Lightnings having been moving around a bit recently; I'm still not clear whether all the "NATO" stuff at Grainthorpe has moved and how/if it's related to the "LINCAIR" stuff at Grainthorpe Fen. The closure of Hemsworth "Bomber County Museum" has been another factor.
This is the collection so far.... [edit: moved attachment to original post]

Now updated with some links and pics - I'm particularly pleased to have found XR755; I spoke to the owner and with any luck I'll snap a picture of it on Monday.

HI, Nick,
What a great post. I'll have a dig through my scrapbook and see if I have any photos which might be of use to you. Meanwhile, thanks for all your work, and for bringing back many happy memories of my own years working on the Mighty Frightening! Got to be worth a few stars, this one!
Cheers

You're off target for the Boscombe Down Lightning. It's here:

Yes, it's nice when they upgrade to high-resolution photos. That's why the previous target said "home of" - I couldn't identify exactly where. I'll update the compendium soon (before Christmas, maybe even this year!), as some of the links I'd put in have changed. Thanks to higher res pictures of RAF Akrotiri, you can now also see the Lightning and Whirlwind gate guards there - see attachment for Lighting F.6 XS929, the Whirlwind is diagonally across the road. [edit] re-attached attachment, which fell off...

I see they have moved aircraft around at Gatow and a load of placemarks have now been orphaned. The attached placemark replaces the original and will be included in an updated master file some time. [edit]I see that we have updated images that cover some areas in cloud. e.g. Burnhaven, Tangmere. Hi-res pictures of the Royal Kuwaiti AF bases now allow the gate guards to be identified!

Hi, Nick,
I've tidied up some of the orphans, but the placemarks won't disappear until the next layer update.
Thanks,
Frank

Hi, Frank. Great new hi-res of Saudi and Kuwaiti AFBs; any idea about the other aircraft next to the Lightning at Tabuk (see attachment) ?
