I'm surprised that no one has an explanation for this after all this time..
I think it's some kind of "light streak" like when you take a picture of a moving car at night with long shutter speeds (long exposure) it makes long lines of light examples:

it's probably something that reflects in the satellite's lens (a piece of space garbage?) and as the satellite keeps moving it makes a streak
also look at the "lybia swath 3" on the left, where it ends you cannot see the white "swath" line when it passes over the center pivot irrigation plots (black circles) which again makes me think it has something to do with light reflection

a bit like the vanishing crosshairs phenomenon on the moon landings pictures (the crosshairs seem to be behind objects) like these:

the common explanation about these crosshairs is: "they are washed out by overexposure due to bright objects in the scene"
any thoughts?

> "Canada Wager Bay area censored by blurring; > NOT censored in Microsoft''s Virtual Earth Reasons unknown"
I think the area is censored on VEarth too, but instead of blurring they pasted an other image over the same area that is blurred on Google Earth, if you zoom very closely you can see it's an more or less oval patch (lower resolution? older image?). It looks like a big patch also when you zoom out.

I read: " Netherlands (introduced with the new high-resolution images in March-April 2006 and greatly expanded in September). ---- Royal & official residences - we contrast 6 censored with 8 NOT censored ---- Military 2, NATO 11, Air Force 13, Army 25, Navy 8, Miscellaneous 4 ---- Unknown 11 Help is needed to identify these. "
I would like to help. I live in The Netherlands and am by profession quite knowledgeable on military matters. Tell me what you need at VNCCC@mac.com, and I'll see what I can do. For reference, check http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php?...amp;Search=true
Yours truly, CommuniC

This image might be a reason to start another type of problem.

There are other minor ones. But this one is interesting since low-res glacier is visible within hi-res image.

LesVoix,
Your observation on "Libya Swath 3" is interesting. It may lead to a better understanding of the phenomenon. I note that if you follow that swath eastward, all dark objexts show through, even very small ones. Indeed, at all points along its length, the swath is semitransparent. That further reinforces the idea that the visual effect is caused by something happening along that path in the camera's photo receptors. It is not apparently caused by other satellites intervening below the camera, as some postings have at times duggested..

tekgergedan,
I note your finding of an apparent masking error in some of the new Antarctic images.
However, I believe the black area shows the nearby coastal waters, which appear to be inland from the much earlier NASA imagery.
I suggest that the new images show the more current coastlines, which have porbably receded in the interim. Is this visual evidence of global warming?

The elevation is zero. So, it is rather the glacier (rather than the coastline) which expands and draws back according to the seasons.
On the other hand, GE team removes the sea from the images at the moment.
So, there should be an exception for the glaciers, in my opinion. If not, the lo-res and hi-res imageries and even (in the future) the old hi-res and the updated new hi-res imageries can mess up.

About 1000 yds NNE of Friskney in Lincolnshire, UK, with our Wiki Layer enabled, we find the small German town of Lenzen:

The "Roads" layer in Byron, Illinois (not Port Byron) is shifted about one block west from the actual street location.
The position of the underlying image in Byron, Illinois, was corrected in the 2 June 2007 image updates, thereby aligning it with the roads layer.

I have found another area of censorship, a large black box over England, near Kingston Stert (N51 42.460 W000 57.500), introduced in the recent imagery update of the whole of England.
