Google Earth is a wonderful "killer application." Its success depends on excellent data, software, and support. This BBS provides a low-cost Quality Assurance (QA) group of immense size, dedication, and energy. Very few companies evoke similar volunteer resources. This posting and its subpostings attempt to gather the current problems and insure they have been reported to Google.

Outlines, rather than pinpoints, have been provided so that the same problem need not be reported at each road disjuncture, etc. This has been done for such area-related problems as misalignments, pock marks, duplicate images, false mountains and trenches, missing terrain data, and censorship.

Special thanks to bebop, Noisette, sasroodkapje, simon_a, and syzygy for their help in identifying problems, other folks' related postings, and evaluations of errors.

These are usually just areas which were not photographed. However, while some of them are not in "important places", such omissions breed conspiracy theories. (What are "they" hiding?)

  • Bahrain: Missing bridge

  • Canada: Nunavut 1, 2 and 3 and Quebec 4

  • Canada-Alaska, USA border 530514-617330 Partially fixed wih Digital Globe overlay, 19 September 2007.

  • Denmark
---- Greenland 1: This was a small triangle before new global images of 23 March 2006.
    ---- Greenland 2

  • France
    ---- Illies
    ---- Rouen

  • Greece Saronic Gulf islands missing

  • Nicaragua Little Corn Island

  • UK:
    ---- Huddersfield
    ---- Scilly Isles

  • USA
    ---- Lexington, Kentucky
    ---- Oak Grove, Florida
    ---- Yona, Guam

  • "Missing" Coastal Images:
Technically, these images are NOT MISSING. They are a byproduct of the visual methods used to portray coastal waters in the low-resolution background imagery. The water colors progress very gradually from BLUE in the oceans to BLACK at the coastlines.

If an area near the shore which is already black (in a bay, for example) becomes surrounded by high-resolution overlays, the remaining black area appears to be a missing image, and it raises many BBS queries, with some users suspecting censorship.

Notes:
---- Generally, we cannot list missing offshore islands. Too many were lost globally in the March-April 2006 change to the TerraMetrics basic 15-meter background images.

Recent high resolution updates to downtown metropolitan areas are generally well aligned. However, the suburbs are often left badly misaligned. See Amsterdam (Netherlands), Baghdad (Iraq), Belgrade (Serbia), Granada (Spain), Lima (Peru), Luxembourg City, Milan (Italy), Munich (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic), San Jose (Costa Rica), and San Salvador (El Salvador)

  • Africa Megaflyover
---- When high-resolution images are introduced behind an image from the "Africa Megaflyover" Featured Content layer, they are not jointly aligned. The photos were taken at significant angles, so they need orthorectification.
---- Where airport runways are located in the same images, they are diplayed, and they show that the problems are in the misalignment of the Megaflyover images, in locations, compass directions, and viewing angles. (Note the wedge-shaped area on the ground covered by the Flyover image because of its viewing angle, approximately 45°.)

  • Antarctic 644026 image-stretching in four areas of significant swaths: 35°-45°W, 51°-62°W, 146°-180°W, and 164°-180°E

  • Arctic
---- 617415 Canada, Ellesmere Island misaligned 10 kilometers
    ---- 617416 Denmark, Greenland, misaligned 15 - 30 kilometers
---- 617419 Norway, Svalbard, Nordaustlandet misaligned 12 kilometers
---- 617421 Russia, Franz Josef Land misaligned 12 kilometers
---- 617426 Russia, Ushakov Island misaligned 6 kilometers
---- 617424 Russia, Komsomolets Island, Severnaya Zemlya misaligned 10 kilometers

  • Australia
---- 617429 Adalaide misaligned 550 meters---- 617437 Brisbane misaligned 20 - 200+ meters. The area has too many overlaid images for analysis. We illustrate here the use of airport runways which are published to hundredths of a second

---- 617438 Gold Coast misaligned 200 meters: 1% FIXED in March 2007; 35% FIXED in June-July; the rest is NOT FIXED
---- 644193 Jervis Bay misaligned 80 meters west

  • Austria, Vienna misaligned various distances up to 30 meters.

  • Bahamas, Eleuthera Island misaligned 15 meters at north end (617539), 100 meters in center (617554), 400 meters in south end (617555), analyzed by comparing with airport runways.

  • Botswana, 4990 Ghanzi misaligned 1350 meters west

  • Brazil
---- 607979 Águas Lindas de Goiás 200 misaligned 200 meters west
    ---- 3267 Brasilia misaligned 200 meters northwest
---- 644068 Lauro de Freitas misaligned 90 meters east Partially Fixed
---- 664064 Salto de Cima misaligned 120 meters south

  • Canada
    ---- 6129 Kingston misaligned 50 meters east
---- 3635 Mount Hector misaligned 70 meters east

  • Denmark, We show examples of the many areas which use a unique stretching method to smooth misaligned adjacent images. The misalignments are sometimes 40+ meters, unusual for European high-resolution aerial imagery. Odense has a great array of such misalignments

  • France
    ---- Chaumont misaligned 100 meters southeast, 19 June 2007
    ---- Gacé misaligned 85 meters southeast, 26 June 2007

  • Hungary, 5298 Budapest misaligned 25 meters east

  • India, 617643 Southern India misalignments 100 to 300+ meters Some fixed 19 September 2007

  • Ireland
---- Sligo misaligned 20 meters east. Although this is not excessive, the Sligo Roads layer needs many updates (see THIS POSTING), so correcting this misalignment would assist in that effort.

  • Italy
    ---- 5353 Addolorata misaligned 40 meters east
---- 644203 San Benedetto del Tronto misaligned 400 meters west

  • Japan
---- Tokyo harbor image rotated 180º

  • Luxembourg
    ---- Bettendorf, 30 to 50 meters NE, noted 27 July 2007

    ---- 7394 George 30 m W misaligned

  • Spain
    ---- 641686 Agres misaligned 400 meters west
---- Granada suburbs misaligned 440 meters (compare with ROADS). Two new images were added April 2006 which corrected central Granada.

  • Switzerland
    ---- 4827 Basle misaligned 35 meters northwest

  • UK
    ---- 617727 Dundee misaligned 30+ meters
    ---- Leigh, double switchback misalignment

---- 617742 Slough misaligned 50 meters, though slightly smaller after October 2006 updates

  • USA
---- 777959 California, Sequoia & Kings Canyon park areas misaligned about 400 meters westward, creating also a duplicated image area on the eastern side, Partially Fixed 29 July 2007
---- California, Watsonville misaligned 70 meters SWS
---- Colorado, Aspen misaligned 50 meters SW
    ---- 3697 New Mexico, Santa Fe misaligned 400 m W

Data Problems > Border & Coastline Problems

The Compendium Table of Contents contains a single network link which enables you to download the latest version of the entire Compendium in a single file of about 1.1 megabytes.

BORDERS
  • Ceuta & Melilla borders (3813)
  • Chilean-Argentine border Dispute (529241) and Villa O'Higgins
  • Estonia - Piiriissaare [Пиириссаара] (3694)
  • Indonesia - False 1st admin border (3788)
  • Mali-Mauritania broken border (644081)
  • Netherlands - Gronigen-Drenthe border (644120)
  • In the Spring of 2006, the border/boundary mechanisms were changed to a low resolution US-Canadian border, which is wrong by a mile is some places. We show such an area at the "triple point" of Quebec, New Hampshire, and Vermont. See Official Canada-USA Boundaries for an accurate downloadable border.

  • The previously missing Nunavut Canada boundaries are now supplied with Google Earth, but they differ in details from THIS POSTING which provides a downloadable file. The file contains a link to the legal definition from the Nunavut Planning Commission.

COASTLINES
  • Coastlines changed the way they are displayed north of 81° 33' 50" N and south of 81° 33' 50" S, shown in the attached file. These boundaries were moved towards the poles in Spring 2006. The coastlines are now displayed in the following peculiar ways:

    With a minimal window size (820 x 470)
---- towards the nearby pole at altitudes of 10-200 and above 800 kilometers
---- towards the equator at altitudes of 10-40 and above 200 kilometers

With a large window size (for example, 1800 x 1440)
---- towards the nearby pole at altitudes of 30-300 and above 2000 kilometers
---- towards the equator at altitudes of 30-100 and above 600 kilometers

Because coastlines are are narrow yellow lines, they are almost invisible in polar ice-covered regions.

  • 617779 US Kingman Reef coastline seems to be a GIF extracted from the CIA Factbook map, and it is 12 times too large. The most accurate map available online appears to be from US Fish & Wildlife. We provide a corrected coastline based on the CIA map, which may be used by anyone without attribution. 12 January 2006

The original data error appears to come from the USGS Data.

The number of these problems has grown too large for listing in this posting. However, they are all in the downloadable file.
  • 3D Buildings
  • World Wildlife Fund
  • borders - Islands, 1st Level Admin Names
  • Dining
  • Lodging
  • Google Earth Community
  • Shopping - Grocery Stores, Banks & ATMs
  • Transportation - Airports, Railroads, Subways

  • Geographihc Features - Waters

  • Parks & Recereation - Parks, USA national parks, Sports venues, Golf,
  • Community Services - Schools, Places of Worship, Fire, Hospitals
  • US Government - Postal codes

MULTIPLE LAYERS
PaginasAmarillas.es provided the data for many layers in Spain for both Google Earth and Maps. The layers of concern are Dining, Community Services, Lodging, Shopping & Services, and Transportation. We show areas of placemarks which are displaced into the ocean, and the town in which they should be located.
  • Canary Islands
---- Fuerteventura, Puerto de la Peña (1.5 kilometers west) and Puerto del Rosario (3,000 kilometers north, and 245 kilometers northwest of Ireland, noted by Noel_B, 20 June 2007)

---- Gomera, San Sebastián (3 kilometers east)
---- Gran Canaria, Las Palmas (four areas 5 to 50 kilometers east)
---- Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz (360 kilometers east)

  • Miscellaneous Spanish locations can also be found about 500 kilometers south of the Côte d'Ivoire

Data Problems > Censorship [Re: PriceCollins]
          #330444 - 02/27/06 01:30 AM

    Data Problems > Censorship

The Compendium Table of Contents contains a single network link which enables you to download the latest version of the entire Compendium in a single file of about 1.1 megabytes.
    ____________________

A recurring theme of BBS discussion is possible censorship by Google. It has been suggested that this is not Google's responsibility, because the data is provided by other sources, and that users should take it up with such sources. We look to Google for the quality of the output, no matter how or where they obtain the data. As noted elsewhere, one does not receive bad food from a restaurant, and then permit the owner to tell you to contact the farmer if you are dissatisfied.

This is a conservative listing, because censorship can be a serious assertion. The censorship must be clear and obvious when compared with adjacent imagery. Generally, they are in three categories: blurring, pixelization, and "whiteout."

Obvious blurring or smudging: Canada and USA

Pixelization: Netherlands, Massachusetts, New York State, Washington DC

    • Canada
---- Ontario Hydro substation, censored by NY State GIS. Noted by C. Hays
---- Wager Bay area censored by blurring; NOT censored in Microsoft''s Virtual Earth, noted 28 July 2005, Reasons unknown

    • China, Fixed

    • France
---- Dijon airfield, noted by "Jumble," 3 June 2007
      ---- Metz airfield, noted 3 June 2007
---- Reims airfield, noted by "sw," 22 March 2007
---- Toulouse munitions plant, La Société Nationale des Poudres et Explosifs, 4 June 2007
    • Germany Reasons unknown
---- Geilenkirken NATO HQ - the reason for this one is apparent. Caused by the new Netherlands imagery.
---- Heidelberg's "white-out" determined to be uncensored; Kleinglattbach, Monzelfeld and Oberthulba moved to "Missing Images."

    • Israel
Jon Kyl (Republican of Arizona and co-chairman of the US-Israel Joint Parliamentary Committee on National Security) and Jeff Bingaman (Democrat of New Mexico) amended the 1996 Defense Appropriations Act:
      Quote:

No department or agency of the Federal Government may license the collection or dissemination by any non-Federal entity of satellite imagery with respect to Israel, or to any other country or geographic area designated by the President for this purpose, unless such imagery is no more detailed or precise than satellite imagery of the country or geographic area concerned that is routinely available from commercial sources.

In 1998, the US Commerce Department determined the routinely available resolution to be 2 meters. In June 2006, Google Earth improved most of Israel from the general 15 meter backgournd resolution.

    • Italy
---- After further analysis and consultation, Aviano and Pisa airbases have been removed from this listing, April 2007

    • Netherlands (introduced with the new high-resolution images in March-April 2006 and greatly expanded in September).
---- Royal & official residences - we contrast 6 censored with 8 NOT censored
      ---- Military 2, NATO 11, Air Force 13, Army 25, Navy 8, Miscellaneous 4
---- Unknown 11 Help is needed to identify these.

    • Russia:
---- Chukotskiy censored by blurring, noted 23 July 2005 and 18 February 2006. Instead of blurring, Microsoft's Virtual Earth copied a nearby image and placed it on the area, which we show. Reasons unknown

    • Spain::
---- Canary Islands: All prior censorship removed with 29 March 2007 update.
---- Catalonia: 5803 Cap de Creus radar

    • UAE: Tarif, Abu Dhabi area no longer has what was considered to be a questionable gray rectangle.

    • UK:
---- 617465 Calstock, noted Posting. NOT censored in Microsoft's Virtual Earth

    • USA
---- Washington, DC: Naval Observatory and the US Vice President's house
An uncensored view is available HERE from a govenment Web site. Microsoft's Virtual Earth also blurs this location. They also still blur the Capitol buildings and the White House, which Google stopped censoring in the autumn of 2005.
---- Massachusetts State GIS censorship. The high resolution imagery is supplied by the state's MassGIS agency. They have introduced their own form of easily identified "pixelated" censorship.
---- New York GIS censorship: The high resolution imagery is supplied by the NY State GIS agency. The censorship appears to be selected by the counties, because they vary greatly in criteria. Westchester County continues to be the most highly censored, followed closely by Long Island. We have significantly expanded our analysis upstate and in Long Island after the September 2006 image upgrades. Many blurred Hudson Valley locations were noted 5 May 2006. Note the 7-by-7 mile size of the West Point Academy forest blurring in Orange County. Orange and Suffolk County have not blurred some locations - they simply "paint" them in white.
---- Perry, OH: nuclear power plant. This has been blurred in Google Earth, but it was clear in Google Maps until January 2006. See this posting for all such plants. It is NOT censored in Microsoft's Virtual Earth

Re: Data Problems > Terrain Errors [Re: PriceCollins]
          #331558 - 02/27/06 09:16 PM

There apears to be significant problems with the terrain model in the South Island New Zealand. As an example: Sutherland falls
    http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/327642/page//vc/1
is approx vertical in real life, however it appears almost horizontal when viewed at an angle in Google earth. Adjacent Lakes etc are at odd angles, and rivers are flowing along ridges.

Mt Aspiring, a very impressive mountain has vanished, however the topography in the general area is correct.

Mt Cook, also a most impressive mountain, looks like a rounded hill in GE, and adjacent rivers are flowing along the side of mountains, rather than in the valleys.

I have checked the images against a series of maps, and they are very accurate - it is definitely a terrain problem. What is the underlying topo base?? SRTM??
