Live Position Update How it works [Re: sejtam]
      #41806 - 07/15/05 06:09 AM

Hi sejtam,

I get race progress information from

http://www.letour.fr/2005/TDF/LIVE/fr/1300/dprofil.html

for today.

Tomorrow it will be 1400 instead of 1300

There we have a line saying
"Déjà parcouru : 44.5 km | Reste à parcourir : 129.0 km"
and that is all the info you need from the web.

On the other side you need the track coordinates with distance information.

Well the coordinates are already there in Nagoyan track. (just save the track as KML file and look at it with an editor)

I the compute the distance from the start for each point. (That's a bit complicate, look for great circle distance calculation)

The i have a lookup table where I can find the relevant coordinates corresponding to the distance information I got from the web.

These coordinates are then written into a small KML file.

GE is reading this file at regular intervals and so updating the position.

I use Excel for some good reasons:

1) I am quite familiar with it
2) It is verry easy to link web pages as an external data source and update it.
3) it easy to process the data with it.

BUT its uggly to write data to a file.

and it worse if you try to write to the internet!!

And that is why it not working!!

If you want to see more, download my excel file, disable macro execution and look at it. No hidden feature.

regards,

Huh, that was unfortunate that you got offline while you away from your home, and I don't have Excel on WinPC (do have one on Mac...)

But some of folks here got succeed tracking on his Google Earth backed by Excel:

Would you upload another kml for crucial Stage 14 tomorrow?

thanks,

*** Stage 17 Route Map for Google Earth [Re: nagoyan]

Here is KMZ file for Stage 17 Route Map with path/point/distance info.

Stage 17 - Wednesday, July 20: Pau - Revel, 239.5 km

After all mountain stages are over, the longest stage is for long breakaway and sprinter jersey contenders.
There are 2 90-degrees corners just in front of the finish line, so if it's rainy or large group rushs to the goal....

I added some path thru the finish line in the city of Revel refering the map below.

More about this stage:
letour.fr
cyclingnews.com

Finish:

Enjoy,

nagoyan

Here we are,

After quite som rework on the program to improve reliability I have the live race position for Stage 14 up and running.

The setup is now also covering all upcomming stages of the Tour de France 2005

I added an update information in the placemark description, so you can check when the file was last updated (French Time)

Enjoy it.

For all of you wanting to see the race progress here is the solution.

Update position of the head of the race every 30 seconds.

Enjoy

lucifer666,
This was awesome!! Last night for Stage 14, I fell in a little sleep while watching it butIt is so easy to follow the race right after I suddenly woke up!

There is some screenshots:

Regarding the finishing line for Stage 14, the GPS data by tour.ARD.de finishes at AX 3 DOMAINES Cat 1 Hill - still 1km to go. So this is why the red car stop there....I have added some more path toward the finish line in my route map, refering this map.

Again, thanks for your awesome work. Looking forward to the crucial Stage 15 tonight!!!

Hello Nagoyan,

Thanks for the enthusiasm.

I have created a second view for the follow up, trying to calculate the heading for the camera.
I dont know why for some positions i get a 180 degree swing but i think its worth trying.

Just leave on of both "Le tour live" or "le tour live angle view" active or you will end up switching between both views as they refresh.

Enjoy

Here is KMZ file for Stage 18 Route Map with path/point/distance info.

Stage 18 - Thursday, July 21: Albi - Mende, 189 km

After the Pyrenees stages, the Tour goes over even another mountains - Massif Central in the middle of France. And this stage is for long escaper... in 1995, Laurent Jalabert won Stage12, after a long escape and climb over Côte de la Croix Neuve, finished in Mende - it was a memorable Bastille Day stage victory.

Additionaly, in the middle of this stage, the Tour will have a sideways glance of Millau Viaduct, the world's tallest bridge across the Tarn valley - 240 meters high.
For Google Earth, there is a Geobloggers KML to grab the nearest 50 geotagged Flickr Photos, so I easily found the place mark of a good flickr photo placemark of Millau Viaduct - it is included in the route map.

**See Google Earth + Flickr Hack discussion for more info about this flickr photo KML.

The route path is slightly modified around the finish line in Mende, refering this map from J SPORT:
