DC-3 A victim of Hurricane Charley [Re: Hill]
      #164180 - 10/19/05 11:42 PM

This DC-3, upside down in a cow pasture near Wauchula, FL, was first reported by genehil.

Quote:

Bruce Anttila Van Hoover of Sarasota took a trip Saturday to Wauchula Municipal Airport, Sebring and Lake Wales Municipal Airport and wrote a story about his experiences. This DC-3 in Wauchula was tossed 200+ yards from its moorings over an airplane parts field and a row of trees. He adds that the people employed at the field lost their jobs, as well as their homes. The trailer park adjacent to the hangar was wiped out as well.

Quote:

There was a majestic and grand DC-3 parked in the field adjacent to the place we skydive. Shimmering silver aluminum in the setting sun will forever be how I will remember it, for now, it rests a full 200 yards from where it was parked having been lifted from it’s space and tossed aside like a child’s toy. The craft was lifted from its moorings, tossed over a field of aircraft, over the tops of several large trees to crash upside-down in a cow field. Having never experienced an airline wreck, I found myself queasy approaching the wreck, even knowing no one was in the plane when it happened. The plane’s owner approached us after we got there; all he could do is wander around it completely in doubt that this could have happened.

NOTE: The original web entry has disappeared.
NOTE: The image of the upside-down plane is now gone. Newer? imagery shows a DC-3 back at the airport.
UPDATE: Now there is no DC-3 visible; only the story remains.

Also... Here's an article in my local paper that is quite interesting about DC-3 conversions that will take them on for many years to come...

The Prairie Aviation Museum in Bloomington, IL has a recently restored DC-3 in Ozark Airlines livery... and is offering Flight Training and/or Passenger Rides.

I flew in more than my share of C-47s diring my years in Vietnam... I remember it took forever to get from point A to point B... but what I'd give today for another flight in one of these old girls...

Here's yet another bit of trivia - without an actual DC-3 or C-47 to see on GE... but in Titusville, FL the Valient Air Force is busily repairing their C-47 that had a difficult landing a few years ago.

They hope to have it ready for the 2006 Airshow Schedule...
