I was actually searching for a map to overlay that detailed Pope Sixtus the Fifth's (best Pope name, IMO) redesign of Rome using Egyptian obelisks as focal points for grand avenues. About 25 years ago I heard urban planner Edmund Bacon (responsible for the renewal of downtown Philadelphia and father of Kevin) tie together Sixtus' plan for Rome, the design of Paris and William Penn's original layout of Philadelphia.
Here's a great article referencing Bacon's work and focusing on the design of Rome
For those interested in exploring modern Rome, an excellent tool can be found HERE.
This is an interactive map that allows you to localize an area from a bird's eye view map, then use your mouse to "drag" yourself around the city and a slider to zoom in and out.
I guess you'll have to see for yourself to fully appreciate.. It ties into the EV views fairly easily.

"Nobody is interested in solutions if they don't think there's a problem. Given that starting point, I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous (global warming) is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are..." -former Vice President Al Gore, Grist Magazine, May 9, 2006
Hot Maps! What a great find. This is probably the best city mapping interface I've seen. Went right to the top of 'My Favorites' page. Limited coverage though, but all the great cities. Great way to explore cities you've never heard of. Like Moenchengladbach, where the is that anyway?

This is a great on-line map! Thanks for posting it. I've been thinking I needed to buy some tourist maps to use with EV, but this is much better. Now If we can just get it merged into earthviewer's overlays...
BTW there is another mapping service I use occasionally from superpages. It works like the "Show Me Yellow Pages in EV", but has a better search. Unfortunately it's java based and slow to use.
Thanks all! Excellent mapping tools...thanks for the links! Now, if I could just locate something on the map and click to zoom in on the EV sat photo....hmmmmm....
