Note: it's probably best to visit the web site to get the links, as they may change on occasion.
National high-resolution (1 km) radar reflectivity mosaic, updated once every two minutes, can be found at http://wdssii.nssl.noaa.gov/geotiff.
Two relevant presentations at the 2006 American Meteorological Society's annual meeting are:
Thanks,
Travis Update 24 Aug 05: added the contrast adjustment tool suggested by "SMcQ." Re-download the link for it to take effect.
Update 28 Sep 05: added NWS warning polygons, updated once per minute. Visit this web site to get the warning-only KMZ. Full-CONUS radar (not the tiled version) is also available there.
Update 31 Oct 05: added some GOES satellite channels and 1-hour precipitation totals. All images are full-CONUS (potentially big files).
Update 25 Jan 06: added links to background papers.
Sometime in Spring 2006: added SPC storm reports.
Disclaimer: these are provided for research only. Expect data outages.

That's a great find, Travis!
But - while the source updates every 2 minutes - I don't see anything happening in GE....no updates , no nothing...
What am I missing???
Thanks, Claus

Works fine for me, how great! I like the option of the interpretation scale across the top and the built-in Copyright notice. Good job!

My bad -- the source was getting updated, but apparently the image was being cached. I've changed it to point to a different image each time, now, and verified that it does indeed update every time a new image is generated. It actually checks once per minute by default, but the images are only generated once every two minutes at the moment.
There are two outstanding issues (at least):
1) Needs a non-lossy image format that has a better compression rate than a geoTiff. Right now the 3000x6000 images are about 2 to 4 MB each, depeding on the weather. I tried a png, which was only about 1 MB, but the areas that should have been transarent were solid black and vice-versa (using linux "convert").
2) It would be nice if there are an easy way to rapidly loop a series of images. Any idea if this will be supported in the future?
Thanks,
Travis

Travis -
Updates now...no missing that big red "loading" frame :-)
Nice job tracking down the problem!!!
Any way to get rid of the violet "super frame" around the US???

I replied to this before, but I think it got deleted....
The violet serves the purpose of showing where radar data are unavailable. However, the bands outside of the USA are pretty ugly. I'll try to think of a way to get rid of them while still preserving the information inside the coverage area. This may be in the form of a second map. For the time being the "unavailable" data has been changed to a transparent background.
Thanks,
Travis

That is pretty friggin cool, with it updating and all. I am fairly new to this, and just learning what exactly the data layers can do, and I think I will be using this a lot, living in Florida and all.

Check the top of this thread for updated location. The image is now tiled for faster load times and being served on a new web site. We should be adding several new things later in Aug. or Sept.

I love this radar and I would use it only but it takes about 30 seconds for it to load just one region. And I only have the one region selected. PLUS I'm on cable broadband. I hate that it goes blank for the 30 seconds or so it takes for it to refresh.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm able to access them from a remote location without any trouble loading them (< 0.5 s). Right now, at a busy time where the files will be largest, the files sizes are:
- 1.1 M NC
- 567K NE
- 290K NW
- 678K SC
- 534K SE
- 261K SW
so, those could be big, depending on your connection speed. Files are TIFF format. PNG makes the files smaller, but I wan't able to make the background transparent in that format (GE bug? Or else a problem with ImageMagic).
