If all the ice in Greenland and Antarctica melted, sea water would rise to the level seen here in the San Franciso Bay Area.

So... not at all then?
The liklihood of "all the ice" in Greenland and Antarctica melting is ... zero.
Global Warming: man-made catastrophe, or part of a natural cycle?
Hmmm... let me think about that....

Who says?! You so sure about that are you? Look, I'm no radical environmentalist, and I do hope glabal warming doesn't happen. But certain people will continue to deny it even when it happens. They will still say its a natural flucuation in the climate. But its no longer a theory, no longer requires "evidence,"... it is happening! Oh yeah I forgot, its a good thing that we are re-converting millions of years of locked up carbon! Its a good thing that we are clear-cutting vast areas of forest and exposing the ground to sunlight!

As much as I know, UK started a project of withdrawing the roads along the shores and additional measures to meet the challenge of sea-level increase.

Humans will be extinct by the time Antarctica melts.

As we all know icebergs 9/10 part is under the sea level. Icebergs at North Pole are extremely huge above the sea level. Imagine how huge are those under the sea: 9 times bigger (look at the picture). Imagine how much water is displaced by these huge icebergs from the world oceans . When the ice melts the water displacement of the icebergs are much lower since they become smaller ergo the sea levels won't change because of ice melting. The climate will change because the sea streams direction will change in reply to the warming water, as well as the direction of winds. This changes are already here only we don't pay attention. Look around there are heavy rains and floods everywhere. We are sitting and do nothing like a toad in a boiling water. If a toad jumps into hot water it will jump out. If the toad is sitting in a continously melting water it will boil without any action. So is the behavior of humans in this situation. Only the bowl is our planet and even if we realize the changes if its too late we cannot jump out...

According to measurements taken by Rutgers University, current warming trends show that the oceans are rising two millimeters per year, double the one millimeter rate of 100 years ago. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/11/051124220656.htm
I don't want to say its not a problem, but 'ol chicken little is really hurting the cause with ridiculous posts about the oceans rising 450 feet into the Berkeley hills. The only warning that should be on this hillside would have to do with clearing brush from near your house before this drought gets worse.

Correct, but in the case of Greenland, the ice is not in the sea already, so whatever ice melts, it goes to the ocean. Additionally, the adbedo feedback occurs, where as soon as the lower surface of the ice shows up, absorbs more solar energy and melts even faster.

Villaman - Your toad analogy is perfect for human behavior!!! It doesn't leave much room for hope, but I guess I'm not too hopeful anyway about change in human behavior. Good intentions are sabotaged by politics.
